I worked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I loved the students. From elementary to high school. They made up for the low substitute pay and poor administration at some of the schools.

    Cons

Poor administration at some of the schools. Some teachers turned their noses up and refused to help answer questions. No school order at most of the high schools. Chaos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire administrators with back bones that are not afraid of the students. Don't be afraid to discipline and remove disruptive students. Some children do come to learn.

I have been working at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I have very few behavior problems. Children are mostly from a 2 parent, middle class, suburbs home. The majority of parents are supportive and want their children to succeed.

    Cons

We have helicopter parents and over-parented children. Teachers have too many meetings and very little freedom to plan schedules.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow us to set up our own team meetings. Use e-mail. Use shared google docs. Have parents watch kids during recess.

I worked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Was able to enjoy time with my children having the same schedule as they did. Great job for parents while kids are still school age.

    Cons

A lot of responsibility to place on one person. Too many people to keep happy with no support from school principals, most were indifferent.

I worked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great if you like working with children. Opportunities to learn more ways to teach. Benefits are OK if you work for NC long enough.

    Cons

Work even on your time off. Not much respect from most people above you, or at least no understanding; especially from those above the principal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat teachers as people, not means to your end. Teachers who are exhausted and demoralized don't make good teachers.Yes, teaching is about the children, but that doesn't make everyone else worthless. Don't know how Morrison is; I worked under Gorman and thought he only cared about himself.

I have been working at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for more than 3 years

    Pros

The pay, benefits, and retirement was the best thing about this company.

    Cons

Teachers getting cut after 4 years of employment and having to struggle to find employment elsewhere. Also, getting paid only 10 months is not good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees and don't treat professionals like children. They went to school to learn their craft.

    Pros

The city of Charlotte is great and growing.

    Cons

There are a lot of high needs students, but there is no clear plan to meet them where they are. As a result, teachers are blamed for low student performance.
