Current Employee - Server, Hostess, To-go Specialist  in  New York, NY (US)
Current Employee - Server, Hostess, To-go Specialist in New York, NY (US)

    Pros

as a server : no need to wait 1 or 2 weeks for a pay check. you make your money you leave with your money the same day
short shifts 11-4 or 4-10 good work life balance
    flexible hours
GREAT chance for growth you can move up in the company to management with in a year if you prove your self and let them know if that what you want
you can work many different positions one day be a host the next day bartend next day waitress
day goes by fast because your busy all day no time to be bored or even look at the time
you determine how much you make depending on how well you upsell and push alcohol or appetizers
you can make 700 per week if you work hard. just be confident and organized
you make a a lot of friends unlike other jobs here you work with 25 different people everyday. u meet someone new every week.
    fast paced environment

    Cons

    high amount of stress !!!!!
    fast pace can be overwhelming
deal with impossible guest who come just to basically get a free meal and not tip.
3 guest complaints and your out !
multi tasking is a must. 3 tables at once mangers expect us to greet table within 30 seconds with a wine bottle.
unlimited soup salad and breadsticks and drinks to 3 tables at the same time can be overwhelming plus take order and make sure it comes out hot and on time not too soon not to late.
if one thing goes wrong it has a huge ripple effect and ruins your mood for the day. bad mood = bad tips
managers treat you as a number not a person you are not allowed to know when you can leave
    unstable income
slow days= slow pay vice versa

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

some managers are great some are control freaks. they treat workers like children

Former Employee - Server in Cherry Hill, NJ (US)

    Pros

Extensive training, room for advancement, encouragement by staff and management, Darden Dimes is a wonderful benefit.

    Cons

Disorganized shifts, no end times for shifts, and communication could be better at the beginning of shifts to advise the waitstaff of menu items that are not available. Also, if you need to change your availability for any other reason other than going to school, they will not allow it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make "86"ed items a point of priority during talk ins, allow employees to change their availability for reasons other than going to school. Working parents have children in school, and that should also be a consideration.
