Pros

Autonomy's IDOL technology and the products they built around it are really competitive, specifically around the E-Discovery and Information Managment Solutions. Their marketing had always been very good, fantastic material, good demos, etc. Also the support from the Pre-Sales department has been exceptionally strong.

Cons

The corporate culture had been the worst I every experienced. People were purely looked at from a numbers perspective, senior management would never listen to anything they were told from somebody who was not part of their "club" (i.e. at least Cambridge based). Senior managers would regularly shout at employess, call them names, etc. - absolute nightmare

Advice to Management

thankfully the senior management has completely left since the acquisition by HP. The new management should clearly pay more respect to their employees. Also the "international" approach has been purely around the UK and the USA. Any other part of the business (regionally) was overlooked. Management should pay a lot more attention to other regions, since there is untapped potential.

    Pros

Relaxed work culture. Casual to smart casual dress code. Good starting salary for graduates. There are times when there is actually nothing to do (sometimes for weeks or even months), usually between projects or when a project is postponed. You'll be able to work from home frequently if that's what you prefer as it's quite common with other employees and managers. Newly refurbished office is in a very good location based in the City, London with various places to go to for lunch. Biggest positive was that I was fortunate enough to work with a great bunch of fellow consultants (except one) on various projects. They were extremely helpful and a joy to work with.

    Cons

There isn't really a future working for the company. The old Autonomy philosophy was to hire consultants within the first couple of years of graduating and offer a decent graduate salary. From there the chances of getting a pay rise or a promotion is very unlikely, even after when the company was acquired by HP. Training/shadowing is insufficient and sometimes non-existent (depending on the product.) There's no formal practice for the company to retain material (documentation, guides etc.) created from previous projects, therefore information is siloed in people's heads which is then lost when they leave the company. Most consultants are shoved onto projects that are mid-way though its lifecycle with little support or briefing. The company has no structure or process to help employees with their career progression. Consultants spend most of their time using and deploying in-house software applications, and learning very little transferable skills in the process. Projects are managed in a very top heavy structure, with many PMs and seniors managers reporting progress but very few consultants assigned to do the actual work.

Lastly, many employees (consultants, PMs, managers etc.) including myself have left the company recently. Some being made redundant, others leaving for the greater good. HP don't intend to hire new people any time soon, especially not for the HP Software/Autonomy division. Further redundancies are inevitable as the company seeks to minimise losses from the acquisition and other areas of the business as they prepare to split the company into two at the end of the year. If you are lucky enough to receive an offer to join HP Autonomy, be very prepared to what you are signing up for!
