Pros

Can be a fairly dynamic work place. Opportunities do exist to move upwardly within the organisation if you are willing to tow the company line.

Cons

Poor systems, unwillingness to change, static thinking, lack of togetherness. Attracts some good staff but doesnt retain them. Most managers appear to be people who have stayed at the company for years and have created there own little kingdoms. This tends to result in a lack of cooperation and an insular approach to the other departments. More emphasis needs to be put on performing quality work and producing a quality product. This may impact on throughput and cost but the client retention is likely to improve.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to have a thorough update of in house reporting systems and listen to staff about the problems with these systems. 6 sigma is too slow to remedy many of the immediate faults.

    Pros

Collaborative work environment, values talent, promotes personal development, strives for excellence in delivering value for our customers. The project work is challenging and adds value to the organization. The employees who have been around for years are unique in that they are extremely knowledgeable and also welcome new ideas.

    Cons

Decentralized internal support processes increases the complexity of delivering consistent support to the global business units. That variance becomes the opportunity to deliver highly valuable process improvements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep an eye on your primary resource - your people. Continue to take care of your people and they will take care of you.

A lot of great people, but enough bad eggs in management to frustrate you

I have been working at Covance

    Pros

Lots of great coworkers, people are always willing to help out. Awesome benefits as far as time off and flexibility. For the most part no one looking over your shoulder all the time.

    Cons

Some bad policies in HR and throughout departments keep people in positions that are a bad fit, when there are better opportunities. Even if another dept. wants you, you may not be able to leave.

Way too many decisions are based on some VPs new idea to show that he/she is working toward the corporate goal for the year. This usually means changes are driven by people who don't understand the business at ground level, and efforts to improve from the ground up run into resistance from risk averse middle management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Delegate responsibility at a lower level and be more flexible with internal opportunities.
