Current Employee - Business Development Manager in London, England

I have been working at Elekta part-time for more than 8 years

Pros

Good values and interesting line of work to be involved in. Great opportunities if you like to travel

Cons

Grown by acquisition so structure and process still disjointed. However, programmes in place to address this.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work harder on the integration. Too many chiefs and not enough indians

I have been working at Elekta as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of friendly staff, and good opportunities if you are willing to move between specialist areas. The structure of the company is improving thanks to recent changes, with clear pay banding etc.

    Cons

A bureaucratic culture. Promotion within a specialist area can be difficult (dead man's shoes). A lot of overtime can be necessary near deadlines. Travel can be difficult, even from London, unless you are willing to relocate near the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find out what the middle management aren't telling you.

Exciting because of the products you work on; frustrating poorly run organisation

    I worked at Elekta

    Pros

You work on a wide range of business and engineering medtech challenges. Good career growth potential. Great people (most with either engineering or clinical background) with a thirst to make things better and openess / willing to share. Good strategy to increase the Oncology solutions portfolio through acqusition. Excellent links to research and University hospitals. Protected business - the market entry is high risk / high expense, with low threat from competitve products (especially as the treatment efficiacy is improving and will be around for a while). Oliogarchy - in 2nd place with aspirations to be first - so a certain level of investment is being made.

    Cons

"Family" run, sales driven, Swedish company. Choices of senior management are subjective and decision making is based on short term / "this fiscal" results. Pragmatists/realists don't survive here - Spin Doctors/"quick buck" optimists do. This leads to an eclectic management "club" and knee jerk decison making ranging from brilliant to awful. In other words, a very random environment to work (never a dull day :)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Serious about being number 1? Then a learning organisation is required with level 5 leadership and long term planning that goes across the fiscal barrier :) Simply put, management that puts the business and their employees before themselves and takes risks to meet the overall objective of being no.1. Success and their people will follow. Delivery of short and *long term* plans (the strategy is good) that are *followed through* (not another new powerpoint as it's that time of year again:). Less subjective leadership required - too many managers worried about "looking good" - more looking back and measuring the management on their real performance and holding them accountable e.g. following up on the repeatedly poor employee survey results. Focus on the real customer needs which should drive the integration of the newly acquired businesses and the products e.g. the customer is not interested in having to deal with multiple workstations, screens and keyboards in the control room and really gets annoyed when they have to turn patients away because the machine is broken......
