    FIU can thrive, but the lack of direction doesn't let it happen

    I have been working at Florida International University full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    * Flexible hours
    * Relaxed work atmosphere
    * Good work/life balance depending on the job
    * Nice benefits: insurance, tuition waivers to continue education, etc.
    * Stable employer
    * Facilities are relatively new in some buildings
    * Great diversity of people with different backgrounds

    Cons

    * lots of inefficient use with personnel and budget resources within departments
    * lack of communication and realistic expectations within departments
    * tendency to overwork those who are competent while letting the incompetent continue without consequence
    * vacant job positions take an excessively long time to fill, especially in critical areas
    * compared to peers in other state universities in FL, pay is low when Miami cost of living is high
    * system makes it difficult to promote within; makes it difficult to get rid of bad employees
    * nepotism is common in some departments
    * lack of communication between departments - many departments work in their own world ignorant of other departments and their projects

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    If you want to retain people of value: pay them for what they are worth, and don't let the slackers get away with slacking. Those who do not help the university team community should not be rewarded and should accept responsibility. The university has a lot of potential for growth and to improve, but the growing pains are evident if the same broken and inefficient systems continue in place.
