I have been working at Global Communities

    Pros

Global Communities actively encourages staff to identify and implement the best solutions to the toughest challenges in international development. Its community development approach ensures that staff are exposed to knowledge from people all over the world and urged to apply those lessons in other regions and topics. Global Communities welcomes creative thinkers who come up with new ideas (even if those ideas end up failing) and people who are adaptable to difficult situations, personalities and politics. Still, in 20 years in Washington, I have yet to see a more enthusiastic, collaborative, innovative group of people than the ones at Global Communities.

    Cons

Like most jobs, one's experience at Global Communities largely comes down to who your supervisor is. So if you do not have the most enlightened manager (or you have one who is overburdened or under-qualified), you will have to work harder to make your views known and your work recognized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep an open dialog with staff and bear in mind that you will learn much more through one-on-one conversations than through staff-wide meetings. Know that while you can't make everyone happy all the time, you can focus on trends - both positive and negative - and act accordingly to improve morale and retain top talent.

I have been working at Global Communities

    Pros

    - Doing the most meaningful thing imaginable
    - Financially stable
    - Great colleagues, great projects, opportunities to see incredible things
    - Well-intending CEO, organization going through (positive) change

    Cons

    - organization changing for the better but still some negative hangovers of the past
    - some departments are great to work with and for, but some are not
    - some areas of work experience heavy bureaucracy
    - too many millennials expecting everything to be handed to them...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep on changing the organization for the better and listen carefully to feedback from all levels in the organization, especially the program managers around the world
