I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Large company with lots of opportunities for exploring different businesses and functions. Great people. Collaborative. Flexibility to manage my schedule - to work where and when works best for me.

Cons

Too many years of sacrificing the future for the current quarter. Rewards have become too concentrated at the top of the company. Really bad decision making at the executive and board level for way too many years. Workload is ridiculous at times. Little to no time or dollars for training.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to grow through acquisitions (especially gigantic, stupid acquisitions!). Focus internally on innovation and invention. Create a more balanced bonus system (profit sharing rather than the ridiculous 'pay for performance') to give all levels of the company incentives, rather than just executives.

    Pros

    Flexible working arrangements/conditions
    Vast stores of global knowledge on the intranet and self-education resources available.
    You encounter colleagues from all over the world on Day 1.

    Cons

    Strategic and project management all seem lost, focus on fire-fighting and not prevention
    Many major projects lost
    Lack of replacement of lost talent due to years of turnover
    Lines of communication ineffective, many units lacking leadership
    Preventive feedback towards issues frequently swept under the carpet or ignored
    Overselling, overstating capacity occurs too often

    Lines of communication, leadership and feedback need more attention to prevent issues from worsening
