I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

    Relaxed work environment
    Flex time
Decent benefits (401k, health insurance, etc)
Feel good factor about working for a big firm

    Cons

    Vague criteria defined for promotion
Salary increases are not linear with respect to individual performance
At time the employee tends to feel vitimized inspite of very good individual performance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure that your top performers are kept happy (do not try to keep every employee happy irrespective of whether they are good performers are not for the sake of PR).

  2.

Average work environment for an IC, but not for management aspirations

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

There is decent flexibility to work remotely, so you can balance work and personal. Dress code has become relaxed in the former EDS environments now, so Business Casual is no longer the norm....it is casual all the time (unless of course, you are client-facing).

    Cons

Since HP acquired EDS, the compensation and benefits have slowly degraded. The level of headcount reductions reached astounding levels in 2009, leaving those few unfortunate survivors with a work level that is sometimes unbearable. Salaries were reduced for everyone in 2009 between 5-10%, but when the company is asked whether they will reinstate reductions when the economy rebounds, the HR soft-shoe dances are quite entertaining. The short of it is that compensation is now pretty lackluster. Unless you are in the highest management levels, though, then there can't seem to be enough $000's in the compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't play games with attempting to fool the ranks with "equality of pay reductions". It doesn't compare when a hard-working HP employee takes a 5-10% cut on a $80,000 salary, versus you taking a 20% cut on your salary, which represent 1/20th of your overall compensation because you didn't forego your bonuses. You really want to show true leadership? Work for a $1 in these tough times. I'm sure the $50M you banked over the last few years will carry you through.
