Rated as one of the top 100 Canadian employers until 2006. Off the list since 2007. Coincidence? I think not.

Staff Software Developer (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at IBM

ProsVery competitive salary in the Toronto / Ontario region
Flexible work arrangements - flex hours, working at home
IBM still viewed highly in the industry - looks good on the resume

ConsLayers of management and bureaucracy to wade through, wasting your time from doing your actual work
Little to no organic innovation
Rewards those who play the political game and position themselves well, rather than those who consistently output quality work
50-55 hour weeks are the norm, with 60-65 crunch weeks often enforced, for weeks and months at a time

Advice to Senior ManagementEnable and empower your employees to make decisions, take calculated risks, and innovate. Micromanaging them to the tiniest detail wastes everyone's time and doesn't utilize people's skills to the fullest.

IBM

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Austin, TX (US)

I have been working at IBM

Pros: Lots of opportunities for self development, career development. Many great education courses can be completed… Cons: Lower average salary comparing to other similar companies. A lot… Advice to Senior Management: Value people more based on their real contribution and not on the fact that they belong to minority or majority group. Right now it seems… Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend More

Awful Environment (Former Employee)
Boulder, CO (US)

I worked at IBM

Pros: There really are none, unless you can't find a job anywhere else, in which case,… Cons: Wow, where do I begin? Bumbling, disrespectful managers, horrible hours, no chance for advancement, flat wages that actually result in pay… Advice to Senior Management: Promote from within people that actually deserve it, not just people… No, I would not recommend this company to a friend More
