Former Employee - Area Manager in Cedar Hill, TX (US)
Former Employee - Area Manager in Cedar Hill, TX (US)

I worked at J. C. Penney full-time (more than a year)

Pros

jcp is not scared to place you in a role that you have no experience in. Multiple locations throughout the country which provides opportunities for advancement if willing to locate.

Cons

Limited opportunities if not willing to locate. If a position is offered to you and you turn down the position (due to location or job preferences), it is difficult to advance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should evaluate their distribution center HR policies as there are a multitude of under-performing supervisors and managers who cannot be dismissed from the company due to the Pro-employee approach they take. This effects moral of quality employees.

    Pros

    + customer oriented
    + takes good/bad reviews seriously
    + friendly environment
+ managers can be friendly& down-to-earth but know when to manage
    + 25% discount
+ the change [ppl may hate it now but things don't just happen overnight, I think they're going in the right direction]
+ good hours during the holidays
+ spirit week [reminds me of high school and I loved the spirit]
    + recognition
+ new dress code [not business attire anymore]
    + flexible schedule

    Cons

    - even if your department is clean, everyone has to stay til the store is clean
    - late nights
    - random nights where you will have to stay til 4am because the store will be inspected the next morning
    - favoritism
    - difficult to advance
    - so many employees so some hard workers aren't recognized
    - some managers are biased
    - cliques
    - employee drama
    - the change [i understand it takes a while but it's a pain in the ass to re-explain everything to customers]
    - very very little hours after holidays [full time went to part time, part time went to under pay or no hours at all]
    - not enough employees at closing. sometimes there would only be one person closing at Kids, and that's a pretty big department to close by yourself
    - kept pushing others to get ICAPs or online sales.

I have been working at J. C. Penney full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits along with culture and values

    Cons

Last minute communication or conflicting communication from corporate leadership to stores and customers resulting in wasted payroll and lost customer base.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much conflicting communication and direction are being given to stores to execute as well as numerous pricing programs that confuse our customers, call a sale a sale, a coupon a coupon.
