Pros

Smart people, excellent academic/research resources, close to DC and not far from Phili and NYC, reasonable living expense.

I have been working at Johns Hopkins University

    Pros

    1. lots of opportunities for learning (coursework, seminars, certifications) offered to most employees - if you are full time there is a big discount or they are free.
    2. big names in science/medicine/public health come to Hopkins all the time to lecture and staff have access to attend
    3. amazing benefits package
    4. you get to work with some of the greatest researchers around who are incredibly dedicated - which can be very inspiring!

    Cons

    1. it's a huge organization, like a mid sized town, so really you're usually working within a small number of employees + supervisor - don't really interact with anyone outside of that circle regularly
    2. many complain about the compensation being lower at Hopkins compared to other hospitals/universities - personally I think it depends on your specific type of position - some pay much better than at public universities in the area.
    3. the neighborhood around Hopkins (east Baltimore) is pretty depressing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

we need more support for working moms/pregnant employees. Hopkins is so progressive on many other issues, would be nice to see a change in the maternity leave policy (or lack thereof).
