I worked at L-3 Communications full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Average employee age: 35. Free coffee, fresh fruit. Free bagel/muffin day once a week. Good mid-sized company with little red-tape.

Cons

Some roles are pre-defined and hard to move around within the company. Pay is not competitive.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

More professional development training is needed and career goals should be discussed during performance evaluations.

I worked at L-3 Communications full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Easy to get hired quickly. Decent pay and benefits. Good for people who always wanted to be in the military or want to continue feeling as if they are.

    Cons

They throw you in the shark tank of military without any support. You are not encouraged to expand your skills. No sense of being part of the "team."

I worked at L-3 Communications as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

Contracted by Superior Technical Services, the pay, for work performed at L3 communications, is distributed weekly.
Hours worked yields alternated Fridays off. Based on 80/90 format, one works 9 hour days four days a week with alternate Fridays requiring an 8 hour workday.

    Cons

No path to becoming an permanent employee. Some very good artists have been working with no benefits for at least 3-4 years with declarations from management that "it's not within the business model that artists be transitioned into permanent fulltime employees".
Especially for recently graduated artists, the pay is extremely low--but still above minimum wage.
Artists learn very early on that, at the company, art is not considered important--each artist, no matter their qualification or experience, is highly expendable.
The work completed to internal standards is substandard--even for game-side low poly work. No work can be used in an professional 3D art portfolio.
The Lead over the art pool group has no management nor specific art training and it shows through the low level of professionalism, low team morale, and lack of quality oversight/performance targets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Experienced senior /junior 3D artists and their output are valuable to an organization which develops serious games especially given the upward trajectory of expectation levels for the whole of potential users and customers.
