I worked at Médecins Sans Frontières as a contractor for less than a year

Pros

Amazing international experience where you KNOW you're doing good and helping people in need.

Cons

They are not always as organized as they could be. Communication tends to be hierarchically shared. Not everyone knows all they should know when they should know it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect people on their first mission and learn to communicate better! Everyone would be happier and a happy team works better together!

I worked at Médecins Sans Frontières as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

    - Work is inherently rewarding and satisfying, both in terms of issues being dealt with and physical day-to-day achievements
    - The organization is value-driven (neutrality, compassion), and was inspiring to see these values upheld and incorporated into daily decisions
    - Work environment was very supportive, responsive, and well-managed
    - Working/living environment was very comfortable - surprisingly comfortable, actually - but I know this is dependent on your work site/country
    - Work-life balance was great, and was a unique opportunity to live in a new place and interact with international staff

    Cons

    - Steep learning curve at first, and must be comfortable with stepping outside of your comfort zone
    - Pay isn't fantastic, but in context of an NGO organization, was above average
    - Hard to break into organization at first, but seems to be easy to move around once you're in

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue with the values and priorities currently in place
