I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than a year)

Pros

Flexible working hour, free sodas, nice gym membership, parking well available, once a month a party with wine. For interns there was also a subsidized car rental -- a good thing to take to see around, even though not a necessity for commuting as the company accommodation is just across the road.

Cons

working in offices with very thin walls, if someone on the other side is having a lot of phone calls, it may get a bit disturbing. No free food as google has, having at least some fruit available through day would be nice...

I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Amazing speed at which things are done, smart co-workers and great learning opportunities and global impact of your work. Excellent tools and infrastructure makes you very productive. Great medical benefits.

    Cons

Zero work life balance, insane performance review system with a forced ranking system which makes everyone competitive instead of collaborative, ruthless managers who don't care about your career and will not let you move to another group/country. No shift premium / extra pay for overtime /odd hours worked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    It's a glorified sweatshop.

Current Employee - Principal Program Manager in Redmond, WA (US)

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The company is made up of truly bright people from all over the world. If the problem exists in the realm of computer science, Microsoft has someone trying to solve it. We are relentless and persistent. We do not give up.

    Cons

The performance review/feedback system creates an atmosphere of fear. People become selfish about ownership for features/projects as a result. This inhibits collaboration which is obviously important for large software projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the quota based review model.
