I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Great benefits, lots of resources at your disposal. Amazing corporate culture, wonderful opportunity to be among some of the brightest people in United States.

Cons

Very stressful. Managers are not professionally trained and do not seem accountable for decisions effecting employees. Long term career paths are not clear.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train managers, create better long term retention of employees. Give people advancement based on experience as well as performance. Often the employees that take a lot of risk are also the ones that fail.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of perks (free gear, best in class equipment), very smart peers. Innovation is encouraged. The ranks are filled with very smart people who live interesting lives.

    Cons

High stress and lots of politics. It can be quite difficult to advance once you reach the higher levels. Even with tens of billions in the bank, there is little sense of job security -- your project may be canceled at any time, and it is your responsibility to find an alternate work group or you are let go.
