I have been working at Monash University as a contractor (more than an year)

Pros

In terms of remuneration, monash pays very well for contract employees. Dynamic working environment and a work place with many great personalities.

Cons

Slow and lengthy application process. Very inefficient when it comes to approving any internal applications in my opinion. Can be very frustrating to deal with.

I have been working at Monash University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A large teaching University with various career opportunities. Plenty of really clever people to stimulate and collaborate with.

    Cons

Being large it has an unwieldy bureaucracy. Recent improvements have been made but more could be done. It is a disadvantage not to be on the main (Clayton) campus, due to the inevitably uneven distribution of facilities and resources. For pure research it's not as good as the large research-only institutes (eg The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute) which have the facilities are resources to fully support world-class research and accelerate your career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less emphasis (and fewer $$) on management/bureaucracy, more direct material support for academics and researchers.

I worked at Monash University full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work/life balance, generous employer Super contributions, great team environment, use of leisure facilities

    Cons

Regular budget cuts limit creativity, limited transferability of skills-set when looking to exit tertiary education sector

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better recognition of individual and team achievement needs to be made by senior levels of management, and consider financial support for employees considering undertaking further study (especially if a Monash course)
