I have been working at Opera Solutions full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Brilliant vision and potential for products. Too bad none exist beyond powerpoint.

Cons

CEO and senior management are no longer building a company, instead they are running for the exits and begging for money from system integrators for the scientists and smattering of customers. Zero cash for anything to grow the company, and in the last town hall, the CEO admitted the place was in too much disarray to be sold at this point.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do whatever it takes to put the company on solid footing, but please don't sell out to an SI and give away our potential as a pure play. That is why many of us have endured the long road-in hopes of a happy ending or IPO. Invest in either building big data solutions or classic services/consulting. decide to do one or the other. Trying to do both is killing Opera.

    Pros

Although some of Opera’s best people have recently left or been pushed out, the company still has some very bright minds knowledgeable not only in Analytics but also in several client industries.

    Cons

The CEO and main shareholder is after a quick cash-out and is pushing changes that are harmful to the mid- and long-term future of the company.

Morale is extremely low and most decent people currently interview with other companies, several key scientists and the heads of the London and Paris offices have left already and the quality of client work starts decreasing.
HR policies and direction are inexistent and bonuses have been pathetic (or nil) for the last couple of years…

Opera was built with a great business model, combining the insights of advanced analytics with the deep understanding that ex-management consultants can bring to specific industries. For years, it had a clear advantage over other big data market players.
Now, it endeavors to copy the business model of software houses but without having neither the DNA nor the relevant resources for it… add to that the departure of so many good people and the constant changes in the leadership group… disaster is looming.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your act together and stop trying to copy other companies

Lots of work, long hours and little fun, though you learn a lot, quickly.

I have been working at Opera Solutions full-time

    Pros

You get to experience a lot of different things, different companies and sides of companies most will never even read/hear about. Some of the people can be great to work with and be around. Pretty young company, be it since start up and as in the employees are young, so that is good. Lots of freedom and a lack of traditional business structure is a different plus.

    Cons

Tons of work and long hours. Prepare to work, a lot. People can be helpful most of the time, though there are moments or situations where you just need to fend for yourself and manage a lot. The jobs wears you down and you pay a price for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out how to make projects enjoyable to be on and focus on what is going on. Seems like more time/effort/money goes into the higher ups, marketing and unnecessary items than the people working the projects.
