I worked at Turner Construction

Pros

-Independence and little day to day supervision
-Direct contact with company executives
-Work daily with project managers and project executives
-good salary for experience and among peers

Cons

-time lost traveling to department meetings at corporate office.
-division between construction departments and finance almost like two differnt companies at times
-not matched with projects that are closer to where you live and easier to get to
-little incentive to have the project done faster because bonus is set and not based on productivity

Advice to ManagementAdvice

conference calls for department meetings.
Allow requests to work on specific projects. A happy employee is a better employee. Allow younger employees to be promoted when positions open up and replace the lower positions. This will allow new employees to be trained properly limit mistakes and allow you to mold the employees into the type of worker you want.

Company has changed over the years, maybe not for the better.

    I worked at Turner Construction

    Pros

Good benefits package in line with competitors. Good Investment in your training. Well known name to use on your resume when you leave.

    Cons

Mass exodus a few years back resulted in several promotions in management to some under qualified and incompetent people, seemingly out of desperation. If you are not part of the “in” crowd, you may have a tough time getting anywhere. Totally ridiculous evaluation process easily and unfairly manipulated by stealth reviewers and constantly changing goals. Senior PM’s and Exec’s with the ability to avoid real issues and roll their responsibilities into your lap without any support. They have no problem taking credit for your hard work when things go well and just as easily pointing fingers if things start to go south. Rarely will you get any recognition for your efforts and success. Don’t get me wrong, there are some very smart and talented folks, but most have left the company leaving the weasels behind to run the show.

Work Life Balance is nothing more than propaganda.

Percentage of experienced people has dwindled over the past several years leaving some of the lower paid, less experienced in way over their heads. Commonly referred to by some subcontractors and clients as "Turner Tots". Kind of scary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    To Upper Management:
If you can see through some of the BS your lower and middle management are throwing out there, you can bet your clients can too. Take a closer look at some of these people; you may not like what you find. Turner seems to be riding on the coat tails of a reputation and standard of ethics that may have been lost. Just my opinions, not out to bash Turner. Take it or leave it.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Turner Construction

    Pros

The company has a long history of success in the region which ultimately provides employees with an opportunity to work on some of the most prestigious projects within this market. Senior management is people focused.

    Cons

There is very limited potential for career growth past middle management. The company is essentially managed by two individuals and will likely remain that way for the foreseeable future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management should put more focus into adding structure into the company that will allow senior personnel an opportunity to grow.
