"Good 'ol boy" system (in Houston) that spends more time covering up their failures instead of fixing them

IT SECURITY MANAGER (Former Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I worked at Foster Wheeler full-time for less than a year

Pros1. If any other engineering firms rejects you and you need a job fast.
2. If you have a lack of integrity and pride in your work.
3. If you're incompetent and looking to just hide in your cube for a paycheck.
4. If you're OK with HR and Senior Management hiring grossly incompetent people because they're all friends.
5. If you're OK with constant promises, but no follow up or action taken on any reasonable request.

Cons1. Obvious glass ceilings
2. HR has been caught red-handed multiple times trying to perform illegal actions and other unethical behavior against employee records upon departure.
3. If you're an engineer and you're a contractor; prepare to be blamed for the failures of the seniors there. If you're in general operations, prepare to have a severe lack of budget (except for anything related to Safety that they call HS&E) and plenty of blame to go around.
4. Management and senior management across multiple departments try to hide incompetency and failures by keeping people "quiet" without reporting to their UK corporate HQ.
5. No one will accept responsibility in any form that can be used as evidence (emails, recordings, or any official forms).

Advice to Senior ManagementHouston management needs to turn in their resignation papers.

Terrible management

SUBCONTRACT ADMINISTRATOR (Former Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I worked at Foster Wheeler full-time for more than 5 years

ProsNice office (Houston headquarters), some nice people there, very good benefits (medical etc)

ConsThey promote people to manager without any training at all in how to manage people. I suffered at the hands of the Procurement Department. Several old-school managers there who were mostly concerned with guarding their turf. Yes, I was yelled at more than once - so unprofessional!

Advice to Senior ManagementTake some management courses on how to manage people! A serious lack there.

Good mid-sized engineering firm, decent internship

Intern (Former Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I worked at Foster Wheeler as an intern for less than a year

ProsThe people working here are really good at what they do (process engineering) and I learned a lot about engineering that I hadn't been exposed to in school.
For my assignments, I was relatively free to explore solutions as I wished.

ConsSpent my entire internship in the office, very little field work opportunity.
Very much the stereotypical cubical offices, and not even the good open plan cubes, got a little mundane after a while.
Feel like the experienced engineers were very good at very specific technical fields, and might be "pigeon holed" if I was to continue there.
