Good work-life balance, too much bureocracy

Six Sigma Black Belt (Current Employee)

I have been working at GE full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood place to start after degree, international/multicultural environment.
Good career opps if available to relocate. Good level of training.

ConsFormer non-GE experience almost not evaluated at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementEach senior management turn-over comes with new initiatives/metrics/targets...that in principle is good. The only concern is that senior management turn-over usually lasts not enough to see the results of the implemented change...that is bad! Thus most employees are evaluated for what they propose and are able to realize, and executives often just for what they propose...or at least this is how most people perceive the executive turn-over!

An exeptional place to start work...

FMP (Former Employee)
London, England

I worked at GE full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat ethos, a definate work hard play hard culture. The benchmark in setting a simple and well articulated strategy. The place was an absolute meritocrasy and the Financaial Management Program is possibly the best graduate training program in the world. Embrassed innovation and technology early and has reaped rewards.

ConsFace time culture, brutal yearly review, Needs to find itself aftewr Welch years. GE hides is light internationally sometimes and has lost that "innovator" halo affect it once had

Advice to Senior ManagementBe less focused on hitting your numbers and more on the company culture

"OK" Company but very bureaucratic and chaotic

Engineer (Current Employee)
Rugby, England

I have been working at GE full-time for more than 8 years

ProsExceptional benefits such as pension, shares scheme, insurance, health incentives...
Challenging work.

ConsSignificantly below market salary and extremely low salary increment.
You can climb fast if you are in managerial or executive role.
Managers and leaders move every year or two, hence there is no ownership of actions.
Need to change post every year or two if you want promotion.
On a cost-saving rampage but wasting cost at obvious places.
Unrealistic project planning and expectation.
Incongruent actions relative to what are saying from the top management.
Any process are heavily bureaucratic and full of red tapes.

Good company to work at.

IT Internship (Current Employee)
London, England

I have been working at GE as an intern for more than a year

ProsGreat benefits and facilities, great colleagues. One of the better companies to work at. Preaches great work values (turning them into actions is a completely different story though)

ConsLacks innovation - people just come in and do what is least expected of them and tend to shoot down new ideas or innovative solutions to existing problems because no one can be bothered to step out of their comfort levels. Too much bureaucracy and politics around everything.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire technical people and don't give out promotions based on who can talk better - most managers are not technical enough to understand their role.
