I have been working at Gilt Groupe full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I love my team. I love knowing that they have my back and they know I have theirs. The company tries hard to stay on the cutting edge and it's always fun an exciting to work with the latest and greatest technology. The CEO is great and very supportive. They are very supportive of families and women in technology. Great atmosphere.

    Cons

Middle management can make the environment difficult and stressful due to lack of or failures in communications.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you're investing in your future and not just the present. You've got an amazing team but sometimes your managers have to say no to demanding employees.

If you are not management or HR you really do not exist there.

I have been working at Gilt Groupe

    Pros

Positions are not too physically demanding.

    Cons

People are not treated with respect and it shows in morale. Jobs have very poor ergonomics. HR needs a training course on respect and doing their jobs professionally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure all workers are valued equally because it takes ALL workers to make a company a successful one.

    Pros

Great company culture, catered lunch sometimes. Awesome employee discount. Mostly a bunch of really nice people working in Operations.

    Cons

So many part-time employees that never get hired full time because the company does not want to offer benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more FT opportunities to customer service reps instead of hiring so many in rounds. Gilt has a great culture and people are loyal to it, but sometimes CS reps get ignored entirely.

    Pros

Genuinely trying to empower the developer, good for learning new technologies for junior people. Good life balance and possibility of working at home.

    Cons

Not the greatest architecture and poor decision making. Not that good for senior technical people where there is not a good tech vision of the direction

I worked at Gilt Groupe part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Customers were generally great to talk to and work with, and fellow reps were pretty easy going, hardworking, and fun to be in the trenches with.

    Cons

Management is awful. Just awful. There were many policies that required management to sign off and approve of prior to making things happen, yet management (20 something hipsters, most of them) was almost always unresponsive or didn't respond in a timely manner, and would regularly contradict policies by telling you to decide for yourself and act put out that you had the gall to ask something so stupid. Always had time to breathe down your neck for calls that exceed five minutes though. A very demoralizing experience, working for Gilt. Oh, and everything I ever bought from Gilt was junk that broke within days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clear out the kids running the ship because they drive away all of the grown ups who actually care about the customers.

    Pros

great learning opportunity especially at a rapidly growing business with interesting business model

    Cons

supervisors or management do not tell you upfront if they are unhappy with something (very difficult to put up with when you are entry level), every one else at the office knows and it becomes very high school. a lot of office politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

be open to those you are managing

Great company for your resume, lacking motivational management & unfair compensation

I worked at Gilt Groupe full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great company to have on your resume. Still striving to keep it's start up flair (while it's becoming more of a corporate environment every day). Great people on the executive team who are passionate and provide transparency on status of the business and goals for the upcoming year. Great location, near many restaurants and creative atmosphere within the office. Always looking to improve the customer experience which will continue to cement Gilt as the leader within the flash space.

    Cons

Lacks some diversity (especially within senior management roles), and constant shift in priorities and recent turnover makes for an unstable environment. While there are promotions within some departments, not all departments have that good fortune. Work-life balance is purely based on your manager - while it's "encouraged", no one is motivating you to take vacation or have the ability to work from home (other than because you are sick). There is an issue with placing people in management roles who aren't people leaders and lack the experience in driving motivation and fostering a positive work environment. Some members may have the same role yet there is a big disparity with pay. In some departments there is a glass ceiling and the unfortunate part is having to take your talent elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a better process for evaluating those in senior management positions - and not simply placing people in a role because you need to fill a spot. Compensation should be fair for those doing the same amount of work (and achieving the same results) regardless of having an Ivy league university on your resume. Encourage more work-life balance - either this is a tech start up or not. All managers should have the same vision and not their own agenda for how they police their employees.
