Excellent First Job

Cashier/Checker (Former Employee)
Kyle, TX (US)

I worked at H E B part-time for more than 5 years

ProsCompany Values, Company Culture, Perks

ConsHours, Management, Pay, Work Environment

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow partners to have more input in scheduling; cashiering 40hr a week, 4 weeks in a row is a little monotonous. Allow other duties like working lot or bagging.

I am a cashier for this company.

Cashier (Current Employee)
Corpus Christi, TX (US)

I have been working at H E B part-time for more than 5 years

ProsFirst, the company gives a way a free turkey every year for the holidays. Second, the pay is O.K. for a college student. Third, promotions are great only up to cashier, and other departmental representatives.

ConsFirst, the company is very hard to promote into management. HEB prefers to hire more external applicants into management positions compared to internal applicants. Second, HEB needs to send some managers to leadership training classes. Numerous managers struggle to lead and interact with their workers. Third, it is extremely difficult to promote into full-time positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement should re-evaluate the companies SORL selection process. HEB is losing great talent because of the flaws in the current selection process.

It is the greatest retailer !!!

Department Manager (Current Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I have been working at H E B full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood company to move up in ranks. If you're dedicated you can move up and fast.

ConsThe company stands behind being a "people person business" but some of the people they hire are no were close to it. It's worse when there your boss. It's a hit or miss on this.

Good Company

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Austin, TX (US)

I have been working at H E B full-time for more than a year

ProsThis is a very good company that really does care about their employees (partners) and the area/community. They offer an excellent training program for those interested in moving into management. They begin with great scholarships for students & other opportunities to move up.

Consit's hard to break though some of the bias and favoritism in this company & there were limited number of females in management. They are little too old school in their philosophies, even for the grocery business.
