I worked at J.B. Hunt full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some good people you work with

    Cons

They want you to work 12 to 14 hours a day and your pay never adds up. No one can fully explain how your pay is being broken down! You get written for just about everything even thing that is really out of your control. They are truly about making money for the company. Your pay changes week to week unless your there favorite.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't take this job if you value your home life!!

I worked at J.B. Hunt full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I started off as a FM on the OTR side of the company then was "promoted" to a special project manager position. Traveled a lot, and with experience gained. My next career path will be a walk in the park in comparison.

    Cons

extremely long hours 5am-5pm, I worked with pop-up accounts and was basically working 7 days a week, pay was 33k so I was extremely underpaid. I knew this, asked for a raise/another manager to help out with day to day operations (at least a two man job). Little to no training, trial by fire mentality, and to be honest about everyone there was so miserable it was depressing to come into work with all the sad people around you. I had to run/workout during lunch to keep from getting fat and depressed like the people there.

Anyways, the company has great potential, but they are far from there. There is no team building, training, and an extreme lack of synergy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take you team out to lunch, have a softball or ultimate frisbee league, cookouts, anything to get people to be part of a team not just a miserable cubicle farm with sad fat people. TRAINING, it works, the trial by fire deal.. not the best way to motivate your employees. Lastly, compensation.. seriously. I was up in NY, NJ, PA, CT, RI etc working 7 days a week for 33k. That was the back breaker that made me move on.

My time at JB Hunt was very enjoyable and challenging. The experience I obtained while an Account Manager was valuable.

Every manager has his/her own management style and the result of their disposition is their own success or failure. JB Hunt had great management teams.

I have been working at J.B. Hunt

    Pros

The ability to work close with your drivers and customer. You are basically given a franchise JB Hunt branch when you become and account manager

    Cons

You are expected to work in excess of 60 hours per week as an account manager, especially one that you are at on your own. If a driver happens to get into an accident you could end up with a 15+ hour day. You are also on call as soon as your drivers get to their trucks, that could be 24 hours a day or 3 am, and if something goes wrong your phone will ring and you have to deal with the issue then, and sometimes go into the office.

I have been working at J.B. Hunt full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Teamwork, dynamic work environment, given responsibility quickly, great exposure to a large business and ability to quickly become ingrained and attuned to large companies supply chain needs and transportation.
Constantly challenged to grow as an individual and team.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be a challenge - its a personal problem for me that I tend to have a hard time switching off. Easy to let work become your life as a result.
On that same vein, time off could be encouraged and given more time sooner.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure you avoid being penny wise and dollar foolish by allowing good people to leave because they feel their prospects are limited or that they can earn more elsewhere and work less hours. Encourage individual growth and mentoring from upper management.
Continue to emphasize to all business units how vital all the other business units are. Currently attitudes of more established units tend to be that they are more important or necessary than newer units. Great exposure and/or cross training should help limit this.
