Current Employee – been working at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center full-time for more than 8 years

ProsIt's very clean and a nice modern and social environment. Each person who works here feels like we make a difference, it's not just a job. Educational opportunities are pretty good. Nice gym on site and plenty of programs for work/life balance. Very good benefits and retirement package.

ConsThere is a lot of red tape here, but I think it would be that way at any place the size of MD Anderson. It's difficult to get promoted or get a decent raise here. The pay is not on par with other positions in different institutions unfortunately. And the workload to staff ratio is very is very uneven a lot of the time.

Advice to Senior ManagementOverall I think Management does a good job, like any other position you have good ones, and bad ones. Do more to see the potential in your people, reward them or they'll leave.

ProsI loved the previous environment, but now...not much pros

ConsI loved the previous environment, but now...because of the depression, it becomes more and more difficult to survive here. Everyday, you will here some faculties leaving the institution, and of course their employees as well.

Advice to Senior ManagementShould give more chance to all the faculties and trainees. The funding is now only in certain people's control.

ProsGreat team work and jovial environment.Everyone is helpful and the team with which I worked was very helpful and guided me to become an effective researcher.

ConsSometimes the work pressure was too much ,some of the team members were disorganized which made the work towards the deadline too hectic.

ProsGreat benefits, including tuition reimbursement and a nice gym on campus to work out in. MD Anderson also has a great mentoring program for developing your professional goals and making connections with employees in other departments.

ConsThe starting salary is relatively low for some positions. Also, MD Anderson is highly bureaucratic so it takes a long for something to be approved.

Former Employee – worked at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center full-time for less than a year

ProsIt offers an academic environment with huge community of researchers and investigators. Got opportunity to mange and analyze data with millions of records of cancer patients which would not be available elsewhere. Inferential statistics which yield new methodologies and new solutions. I developed a new method for early detection of acute kidney injury among cancer patient with creatinine as bio-marker.

ConsBased on the huge size and diverse nature of various departments, HR department works like postoffice and local managers tend to hire like minded people.

Advice to Senior ManagementNew hires must be cross verified by 2 referees at random by the institution anonymously to avoid conglomeration of same ethnic, gender of religious subgroups. Some labs you will see only Chinese or Indians and other people become hesitant to apply there due to possibility of adverse work condition and this can be avoided.

ProsExcellent reputation in cancer research, very good environment and resources and facilities. Clinical cancer research is very strong.

ProsOpportunity to work with the best minds in finding a cure for cancer. Many dedicated employees who still concentrate on quality patient care are keeping the place afloat. Patients are wonderful, hopeful, giving and worthwhile.

ConsToo many chiefs who are more into $, power and prestige than patients or a cure for cancer -unless it can make them more money. Conflict of Interest questions are embarassing to those of us who just want to concentrate on what we are supposed to be all about. Seems to just keep moving further downhill in the CARING and INTEGRITY department.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut the fat at the top. Hire only upppers who CARE, have INTEGRITY and really do value TEAMWORK. Front lines do thier best, despite some really dumb decisions by uppers that cause employee hardships while we just keep trying to do our jobs, keep our jobs, and provide our best to patients. But we are losing some great people, our 'best asset."

ProsGood environment to work in research. Opportunity to collaborate with many experts in different areas. Excellent facilities. actually too many buildings!

ConsNo interaction with other staff out of your field. Limited opportunity for growing outside of your field. Staff working with grants management make your work more difficult.
