Nice company, great place for acturies

Financial Analyst (Current Employee)
Waterloo, NY (US)

I have been working at Manulife Financial full-time for more than 3 years

ProsNice work enviroment, nice management team, a lot of fun events, food courts are not bad

ConsThey should not put accountants together with the acturies both in Fianace, the acturies get far more benefits than accountants, makes all the financial analysts feel so unfair. The reorg. is just throwing more work to all employees, what's the benefit?

Right voice on values, wrong execution

Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Manulife Financial full-time for more than a year

Pros- Global presence and opportunity (I have never worked in a place that had regular calls with folks in Asia or the US)
- Diverse work atmosphere, people of all sorts of backgrounds joined the company, which is interesting
- Supposed meritocracy
- Peers are nice and mostly want to see others succeed

Cons- Very bureaucratic
- If you don't know the right people, it will be difficult to advance

Advice to Senior Management1) Show your people they matter by rewarding those that demonstrate the right characteristics of leadership. Why don't we have performance metrics that measure how well we help our team members? How well our manager helps us to develop?
2) Follow through on the initiatives you say you will and embody the future aims and mentality that you strive for. The company is so large and slow moving and there is red tape everywhere.

Customer Services Representative (Former Employee)

I worked at Manulife Financial as a contractor for less than a year

ProsFlexible work environment Global company, support anyone who takes extra educational studies to improve.

ConsNo management support, Too many contact positions, They lead you on to believing your position will turn to full time when your contract finishes they don't remember what you contributed to the organization.

Great place to start your career.

Complex Claims Adjudicator (Former Employee)
Halifax, NS (Canada)

I worked at Manulife Financial as a contractor for more than 3 years

ProsGood exposure for someone new to the business world. I had two years in a customer service type role and was still completing my undergraduate degree when I got the job. For a student they were very flexible with my odd schedule and the experience looked great on my resume after two years with such a well known company.

ConsManulife can seem very large and bureaucratic at times. I had a fantastic manager but I imagine that if I had not I would have been very frustrated at times. Insurance is suppose to be a stodgy industry, but I wonder who they will attract in the future from the younger generations if they don't work on the culture.
