  2.

    Good, but a contract lab.

    I worked at Maxxam Analytics

    Pros

As contract labs go, this is a very good one. QA standards are very strict, so if you get unexpected results, that is the client's problem not yours. None of this nonsense of just giving the client the result they want whether it's accurate or not, which is prevalent in so many contract labs.

    Cons

The pay is not great, the pace is uneven but often hectic. But again this is a contract lab so that is the nature of the industry. I would advise a young person to start here, put in a few years, and move on to something better, unless you get promoted and enjoy the hectic pace. Then by all means stay and make a career of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share more specific info with employees about state of the company at meetings. Also, Edmonton Environmental DESPARATELY NEEDS A NEW BUILDING. This is more critical than you think.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Met some great people with which I still keep in touch with.
    Benefits are quite good.

    Cons

Cons of the Customer Service Department include:
    Not enough training
Expected to give 150%, but no recognition is received
Management plays favorites - big time
    Management is unprofessional
-Management has made obvious judgments on employee's personal lives
             -Management does not trust employees
Employees are treated like they are worthless
    The on-call schedule is inconvenient
Managers are not given proper training as to how to manage staff and be personable and approachable.
The turnover rate is quite high and staff that has been employed for a few months find themselves training brand new staff.

This is by far the most vile company I have had the displeasure of being employed at.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A lot of employees who have been with Maxxam for years have slowly climbed up the ladder and became supervisors and managers. I strongly recommend that any promotion to a managerial position require managerial training. Just because an employee has been with the company for 10+ years does not mean they will be good manager. It seems that an employee will know the technical aspects of the job but when it comes to interacting with people, they are clueless and very unprofessional.

Also, I recommend calculating the time and money allocated to training new staff every few months (or sometimes weeks!). The turnover rate at Maxxam is the worst I've ever seen. But of course, this may not be a concern of senior management.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The company has a friendly, easy going corporate culture that's easy to fit in to. Staff are generally nice and easygoing. Huge company that is very well known in Canada, good name to have on your resume.

    Cons

Promotions are hard to come by. Seniority is valued above all other traits, meaning people are not promoted based on their value, but based on how convenient it is for the business. Speaking of promotions, once you reach the title of "analyst" you're pretty much done in terms of growth. After analyst is a management position, and realistically those positions won't be open for 5-10 years.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good first experience, easy to be hired, possibility for some promotions

    Cons

Lots of Romanian people (including supervisors) ~ 60 % of staff. They have family company in Montreal. If you are not Romanian, supervisors don't respect you as a human. Easy to loose a job sometimes without proper reason, including at a permanent position.
Another problem: low salary, which almost doesn't increase even after years of experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Totally change management, take out 30 % of Romanians, increase salary.

I worked at Maxxam Analytics as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Great management staff, fantastic workplace policies, and the corporate culture is one that respects employees first. The management staff would routinely come around making sure that each employees needs were being met, and if not they would work towards rectifying whatever was wrong.

    Cons

Shift work among temporary workers, and in the busy season long hours. There is a continual deadline for processed work, but that is the nature of a laboratory that operates based on client contracts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps a third mid day to early evening shift during the busy season would alleviate some of the strain on some workers.
