Stay out of the NY Office if you can

Former Employee - Tax Senior Associate in New York, NY (US)
Former Employee - Tax Senior Associate in New York, NY (US)

I worked at McGladrey LLP full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - being able to work with smaller clients
    - using tax software to prepare returns

    Cons

    - office culture in the NY office is beyond terrible
    - demand you commute to the office on the weekends even if there isn't any work to be assigned
    - no AC during the summer months when told to work on said weekends, stuck using a desk fan
    - Management has little to no personality
    - Management gives you the impression they will work with you and train you but once you are hired and started could care less about you
    - health benefits are the worst i've seen in the industry

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The current staff in the NY tax dept now are the main reason why there has been so much attrition. In the few months of my employment I saw multiple managers, supervisors and staff leave because of the culture alone. Does not promote a friendly environment to work in and just makes people want to leave.

I worked at McGladrey LLP full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Ability to work at home when not visiting clients

    Cons

No organization or procedures in place. High turnover, and the clients know it, so reinventing analysis every year. Upper management either nasty in the wrong role.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think many of the problems are particular to the New York Office. Midwest and Boston seem to know what time it is.

    Pros

Mid-size firm with Big 4 resources. Lots of learning opportunity with a diverse group of clients in the financial services industry. Tight-knit community. Great benefits package. Will 100% cover your CPA tuition and exam expense.

    Cons

Be ready to work long hours during busy season. Office space in the NY office can use some work.

I worked at McGladrey LLP full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You will get a lot of experience of specific industries.

    Cons

It is a national firm that you can get national exposure, but if you do then you will have no one to support you or be able to advance your career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support those that have good work and are involved nationally. Provide actual mentorship for those that are looking for it and try to accept blame for when things happen and not just take the credit for the good.
