An amazing experience, but it requires lots of resilience

Senior Expert (Current Employee)
London, England

I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe people you get to work with, the problems you're asked to solve, and the Firm's lived values are all excellent

ConsThe hours, the intensity, the grind are all challenging. And it can be tricky to work out what advice is genuinely in your interests.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere would be no harm in being a tad more explicit on commercial expectations, in my view. It ought to be possible to do this in a way that remains coherent with the Firm's values.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great opportunity to learn & immerse into various industries, but very stressful and tough culture

Associate (Former Employee)
City of London, England

I worked at McKinsey & Company full-time for less than a year

ProsYou learn a lot about different industries and functions at high pace. Exposure to senior managers. Opportunity to work on important and global problems. Great back-end support. You can delegate a lot of routine tasks and focus on solving problems. Weekends are weekends.

ConsNot always practice what they preach:
- poor feedback: it's sometimes neither instant nor actionable; manager may not tell you how you could do better, but would rather silently keep records to use against you during the performance evaluation
- meritocracy is doubtful: your career progression is based not on some objective performance metrics, but purely on your manager's opinion about you, which might be very unfair
- very stressed environment, people often look unhappy and insecure
- people often have troubles with personal life
- reserved, individualistic and unsincere culture
- hierarchical

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure employees' responses are taken into consideration when doing performance evaluation. Keep in mind that managers' opinions might be subjective and influenced by confirmation bias. Incentivize managers to provide proper feedback and coaching. Encourage upward feedback.
