I worked at Medtronic as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good health benefits, training policies in place

    Cons

They do not care about their employees. They have the mentality that everyone is replaceable. Yet they still expect you to work insane amounts of overtime, which include mandatory overtime, and give up your weekends. You are guilted if you have anything else going on in your life that would prevent you working overtime. And they try to keep everyone on as temps, while stringing you along with a promise of regular employment eventually. Meanwhile, you feel pressured to exceed expectations and work the insane overtime for fear of losing your job. Not a good environment. At all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't treat your employees as expendable and worthless.

Current Employee - Senior R&D Engineer in Fridley, MN (US)

I have been working at Medtronic full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great people excellent projects (when funded) mission driven organization (at least from the employees left from those days)

    Cons

Annual layoffs over past 3-4 years, not the Medtronic it used to be (doubt if Earl B. would recognize this company anymore). For past 3-5 years a definite strategy to move out of MN and become a global conglomerate absolutely flush with management layers, politics, and "strategury" in the Bush sense of the word.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

What made this company great was alignment to the mission from top to bottom that is now eroding drastically as the global financial chiefs chase the profit dollar (do you need to make ALL THE MONEY) to keep the boated company afloat. The distance between upper management and the scientist/engineers is great now with little respect for what it actually takes to get innovative medical devices to market.

    Pros

    Friendly colleagues
Recent improvements for staff welfare i.e. wellness programs
    Nice on-site facilities in Singapore
Good products, making a difference in patient lives

    Cons

Functional teams understaffed i.e. legal/compliance, becoming bottlenecks
    Lack training and development
Big difference between permanent and contract staff
Location and surrounding amenities leave much to be desired
Divide between local manufacturing operations and regional/international entities is unwarranted

Former Employee - Human Resources in Minneapolis, MN (US)

I worked at Medtronic full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people make the business. Most are hard-working, goal-oriented individuals who are also very well educated. The pay is competitive and the business continues to grow and reinvent itself.

    Cons

Sometimes there are too many objectives to focus effectively on getting things done and they change frequently so you may invest time in certain objectives only to find the work product disregarded due to changing priorities.
