Challenging, interesting work, horrible morale amongst co-workers

Certified Custom Framer (Current Employee)
Philadelphia, PA (US)

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time for less than a year

ProsThe work can be fun. I have enjoyed learning a specialized skill, and it never gets boring as there is always an excess of work to do. This is a job that requires design talent and artistic knowledge, so if you have that, this is a job where that is much appreciated.

ConsThe manager is very demanding and rude. The workload is unbelievably high. Expectations are unrealistic, and no one is ever pleased with anything. Morale is horrible throughout the store because everyone just complains about everything and everyone else, and workers have no respect for one another. The framers have about 10 times more work to do than anyone else in the store, during a regular shift, but even besides that, framers are then expected to sweep the whole store, clean bathrooms, and others tasks that they should no have to do when they are the only ones with actual, real work to do.

Advice to Senior ManagementAppreciate your framers more, because the amount of work they are expected to complete each shift is ridiculous, especially considering that every singe detail has to be 100% perfect 100% of the time. Make the cashiers sweep the floor and take out the trash. Framers do not have time for that. No one else in the store can do what we do, so respect that and let us do our jobs. Spend more time training framers before putting tons of responsibility on their shoulders. Have more patience because it is hard work, and takes time to learn how to do it meticulously perfect at light speed. HIRE PEOPLE WITH BETTER ATTITUDES!

Great staff, cheap company.

Replenishment Associate (Current Employee)
Bowie, MD (US)

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time for more than a year

ProsSolving interesting problems, creative freedom.

ConsThe company is very cheap and frugal. Don't expect more than 30 hours in a week unless you're in a busy store AND are the best member on the team. I've racked up the most hours since my arrival and I've only hit 40 hours in a week twice and I've been the victim of cuts down to 1-2 days a week.

Good balance of work & family

Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Michaels Stores full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFun place to work most of the year
Good compensation & schedule
Online training programs
Work with schedule

ConsPeak season is chaotic due to ongoing sets the entire duration.
Hourly pay not competitive in some areas
A lot of workload with little resources

Advice to Senior Managementmore attention to the specific needs of the low volume stores. Delays and low quantities of seasonal freight needs must improve.

Fun Coworkers, Fun Customers, Terrible pay for the work required.

Sales Floor Associate (Current Employee)
Murphy, TX (US)

I have been working at Michaels Stores part-time for less than a year

ProsI have learned a lot about various different crafts. I get to meet people with common interests. Managers are fabulous.

ConsPay is low for the work required. There is a fifteen minute break for 5 1/2 hour shifts, no sitting in between. Had feet problems due to this. People are very messy, and are constantly fixing and cleaning up messes.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay employees better, they'll be happier, and stay longer. There's too much competition out there to keep good employees at such a low rate. I can count on one hand the amount of my coworkers that really care about their job.

Advice to Senior Managementless people so there are more hours, more motivation to be successful

For retail positions, it's about as good as it gets.

Cashier (Former Employee)

I worked at Michaels Stores part-time for less than a year

ProsMichaels prides itself on customer service, so everyone at the store I worked at was naturally friendly. It had a really good atmosphere and most of the customers were nice. The work is not terribly difficult.

ConsThere was no training program at the store I worked at. I shadowed another cashier for about 20 minutes before replacing her as head cashier in the middle of a busy sale. It was extremely hectic for the first week or two.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe implementation of a training program would make cashiers a lot more efficient and would reduce the need to call management to the front for help.

My experience was disappointing.

Customer Service/Cashier (Former Employee)
Bluffton, SC (US)

I worked at Michaels Stores part-time for less than a year

ProsThe store is well-stocked and very pleasant. Most of the associates are very helpful and accommodating to the customers. I found the customers to be exciting and energetic with respect to their projects. They are innovative and eager for direction and advice.

ConsThe training is spotty and inconsistent. There seem to be as many different interpretations of the rules as there are customers. This makes learning and understanding store policy frustrating and confusing. It also puts the cashier in an untenable position with the customer when the manager comes over and "bends" the rules (i.e.. coupon redemption) placing the cashier in the role of "bad guy."

Advice to Senior Management1. Please pay close attention to how middle management views and treats non-English-speaking customers.
2. Implement a consistent, comprehensive training program for all new employees. It should be as detailed as possible with the understanding that each day will likely bring a new and different "variation on the theme."
3. For consistency's sake, assign specific individuals to be "Company Trainers."
4. Address issues of cashier vigilance from the very first day. Most of us are unaware of the various ways unscrupulous customers will try to get away without paying for something.
5. Remind managers that how they treat their co-workers is very visible to the customer. It has to make the shopping experience less than pleasant when the shopper witnesses an associate being reprimanded publicly.
