Former Employee – worked at Newport
Pros – Good entry level job. Veterans are usually willing to teach you the ropes. Education reimbursement.
Cons – Lack of opportunity for advancement. Employees stay in their positions for years which leaves no room for people underneath them to move up. Very little communication with upper management except for the annual review. No job security.
Advice to Senior Management – Don't let your employees stagnate in their positions for years on end. This blocks new people from coming onboard and makes it unlikely for fresh ideas to be brought in.

Current Employee – been working at Newport full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – 401k match is great. The company is smaller so you get to know everyone. Generally good people.
Cons – Upper management is horrible and the is almost no room for advancement. When you do get promoted they limit any pay raise to 5% rather than what the new title should pay. Pay seems below market average for all positions I held.
Advice to Senior Management – Look up employee effectiveness and work on it.

Current Employee – been working at Newport
Pros – 401 K matching is good. Wide variety of products, Once you find a connection at another site they tend to be helpful.
Cons – Poor compensation, mediocre health plan for a company of its size. Micromanaged from the CEO down. No clear picture as to the direction the company is going in. ESOP and Option Grants are all but unheard of at any level below director.
Advice to Senior Management – No brand recognition as Newport,, Spectra-Physics div is the rogue elephant, a shell of what it once was. Management needs to leverage the the whole of Newport and act as one company. The reputation in the field is suffering. Time for some changed in the old boy network across all the divisions.
