ProsInteresting and challenging projects are going on all the time. The opportunity to work on these projects is inspiring at times. Learning from a few of the employees and managers is always a bonus. There is a real sense of camaraderie among groups of employees which makes it a great place to work.

ConsUpper Management has such a skewed sense of self entitlement that they have lost their manners when speaking to employees. Often times SVP's and below are spoken to with such condescending tones, it's embarrassing to be in the meeting. The company is so overly micro managed it ends up bottle necking projects and costing the company more money due to delayed decisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop Micro Managing. NEWS FLASH! Loyalty is a two way street...so many employees are loyal to the Upper Management of OPNET....it would be nice if it were felt from the top down.

ProsThere are a lot of smart people there and there is a a lot of very technical and challenging work.

ConsThey are a company that hasn't seemed to keep up with the times. They haven't adapted to new software processes, new languages, new SCM tools, or anything in the world of software development. They also are too slow to let go of underperforming engineers.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe cons I listed pretty much translate directly into advice.

ProsThe management was really helpful and understanding throughout the internship. I should mention my mentor who was truly supportive and cooperative in project work. I learnt a lot about software development, OOP concepts, coding ethics from him.

ConsI could not find any cons during my summer internship.

ProsStrong work life balance, engineers are valued, challenging work and bright people to work with. Managers know what they are managing and set realistic expectations. Very low churn

ConsAdvancement is difficult to low churn and a young flat management hierarchy.

Advice to Senior ManagementDelegation is important, and senior management needs to federate more.

ProsThe is a perfect place for a beginner. You get to learn a lot of best practices in the industry.Everyone is easily approachable and very much willing to help you in your work.

ConsGiven the small size of the company, the growth can be slow.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management has been doing a decent job. However, the compensation package is definitely low compared to the high cost of living.

Prosthere is a good life/work balance

Cons* low compensation compared to other similar companies
* the decisions that senior management makes are way too conservative without taking even a little bit of a risk

Advice to Senior Managementthe only way that someone advances in the hierarchy is mostly the number of years that he/she is with OPNET.

Current Employee – been working at OPNET

ProsSmall company so great level of challenges. Your work is not strictly limited to your title or what you were hired to do - there is always scope for learning new things and for you to contribute positively to the development of the organization.

ConsThe management style is not the best, very strict management that is also very conservative. Not a lot of things to do beside wok when your at OPNET for example no team development activities or fun outings, events etc. Its mostly just work.

Since the company is small there are times when the work load is monumental because some teams are heavily understaffed and hence you will have to step up and lead the way. There is not much pressure from management but a normal ethical person would end up putting in more hours to complete the task at hand when there is no one else to do the job because the team is understaffed.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more open and conservative
Offer employees more time off and or more team building, office events, parties, happy hours etc. All work and no play makes jack and dull boy - and that is kind of true because of the very conservative management style and lack of things to do other than work.
