Former Employee – worked at Ohio State University full-time for more than a year
Pros – - University environment
- Great benefits, I mean they have their own network/hospital
- Easy to get time off when you need it.
- They prefer to hire from within, and there are lots of different opportunities
Cons – - Middle management is distrustful of employees
- Some employees need to be fired, but it's a state job, so they stick around.
- Funding is sporadic and confusing. Needed projects take forever for funding approval. Quotes from vendors ofter expire due to delays
- Employees who excel are often dragged down to mediocrity due to overwhelming bureaucracy and unreasonable policy
- When sharing concerns with peers, I would often hear "you just care too much"
- Some teams are held to security policys, others are not. Whoever complains the most, gets their way
- Security team (50+ people) play by their own rules, often ignoring change management
- Even the tiniest aspect of the technology stack has an separate employee who's responsible. Trying to change things is met with resistance because "you're invading someone's turf"
Advice to Senior Management – - Start the firing process for those who are repeat offenders of policy.
- Listen to lower level employees. Middle management is often sugar-coating facts
- Invest in technology. You're a premiere university, your IT shouldn't be 10 years behind
