I have been working at Old Mutual full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The CEO is very keen to embed culture throughout the business, and remains actively engaged with employees. The company is very supportive of organic growth and allows employees to continue their development within the firm.

    Cons

Management fails to communicate with teams, and as such, fails to understand true underlying issues of their teams. Most areas of the business are kept in a silo, which is counterintuitive as we depend on one another.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remain actively engaged with your teams. Book bi-weekly meetings to discuss difficulties and challenges, and also sit with your team in the office. I'm unsure why heads of teams are given a prestigious seat miles away from their teams. Many employees are computer illiterate also, which is a slight worry, especially within a business sector responsible for conducting several trades a day and managing large quantities of data.

    Pros

A diverse group with lots of opportunities in Africa

    Cons

Middle management is very poor and the organisation is highly siloed.

I worked at Old Mutual full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A relaxed atmosphere in a truly great location (London HQ), OM could be a company that you work at for a long time.

    Cons

Perhaps some of the vision is and direction is being missed. Subsidiary group companies seem able to 'wag the dog' in certain regards.

I have been working at Old Mutual full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Management and culture thrives to empower employees. Currently there is a drive to change through transformation post a series of M&A activity in the UK - which makes it a really interesting place to work. Overall there is a positive culture to those who want to work with the organisation on the journey to making Old Mutual a big name in UK FS. There has recently been influx of great talent into the business.

    Cons

The organisation is going through a great deal of change post mergers and acquisitions in the UK space, this means that both BAU and central services are stretched. Therefore i could only recommend to those that enjoy change.

I worked at Old Mutual full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Many nice people – especially the more recent joiners

    Cons

Clichés and fiefdoms connected by their length of service, rather than value, competency or effectiveness.

Decision making by committee or collective – no one wants to be accountable for a decision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop shuffling and promoting the same old bunch of people around

I have been working at Old Mutual

    Pros

Balance personal and work - allowing time off when one needs it.
They seem to provide benefits which are slightly higher than other competitors in the industry.

    Cons

compartmentalised nature of the group - there seems to be a lot of r redundancies with no clear group direction. Senior management do not appear to want to feed back information to the staff. Communication is good but could be better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is important that staff feel part of the business. Businesses where staff have felt part of the business, they have given unquestionably of their time and effects. Be more forth coming and keeping staff in the loop with what goes on in the rest of the group and how this might affect them. In this era of near recession, it is important that staff feel senior management are sympathetic to what might become of their jobs and whether or not they will be losing theirs.

I have been working at Old Mutual as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Large organisation, provides lots of work. Regularly new projects and opportunities. Some great people. Opportunities to learn and grow up to a point. Some opportunity for travel.

    Cons

Not cutting edge. Slow to respond to technology progress. A lot of redundancy and bureaucracy. Big projects can be stopped at any point causing some insecurity and a drop in morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on building out your core technology competency - it can not be outsourced with any degree of success.

    Pros

Stable employment and it offers balanced life in terms current and future benefits

    Cons

Not all business units are representative of Old Mutual core values especially at senior management in Foundation Market

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employee Barot survey should be conducted at business unit level. Senior management behaviour is a non matter despite it's effects in the business
