    Pros

Great culture, promotes learning and growing, genuinely wants you to succeed, very bright coworkers. And the food is delicious.

    Cons

You should bring your A game, because everyone else is and expects you to as well. Hard to say that's a bad thing, but it can be a big shift if you're coming from somewhere more lax.

    Advice to Management

You have something really special brewing so far, keep it up.

    Pros

Unique security solution that is easy to implement and rollout. OpenDNS uses big data analytic's from seeing 3-4% of the worlds internet traffic through its 20+ worldwide DNS DC's. It takes this information and is able to predict where threats on the web are: malware, phishing threats, etc.

    Cons

CEO is the founder. He was a kid when he started and still is today - young, immature and green. A good hacker but a poor leader. It's key for him to hire the right C levels to execute the vision and strategy.

Place has turned into a grind shop - high pressure, micro-managing, high expectations - little reward little recognition... very unbalanced. Company is slow moving - been around for 9 years and is trying to penetrate the Enterprise security market from being a consumer content filtering solution.

It's key for him to hire the right C levels to execute the vision - end of the day David U is just a hacker not a leader. Place is turning into a grind factory. High expectations, high pressure from management - low compensation, low reward. Very unbalanced.

    Advice to Management

Recognize and reward your employees. Continue to high "A players" but pay them the appropriate wages.

    Pros

    - Very smart kind people
    - Fantastic CEO who goes out of his way to make sure people are happy but without being too cheerful.
    - Management and work expectations are clear cut, not time wasted
    - Great opportunity to learn
    - Catered food MWF and waffles for breakfast on 1st Wed of the month

    Cons

I've been told a dog comes into work but I haven't seen him yet. I hope he's still alive. My lack of knowing gives me recurring nightmares. Dogs only life a short life time so it really could be something has happened. If it hasn't though, will that dog ever come in?

    Advice to Management

You guys rock, ain't got none to say.

    Pros

David's a very down-to-earth CEO. He has the skills to build product himself - which as an engineer, I admire. This also helps keep him grounded.

OpenDNS has pivoted a since I was there. The company used to be more consumer and SMB-focused, now it's enterprise. The core mission is the same - to make the internet safer faster smarter and more reliable for their customers.

    Cons

Things are probably better now, but when I was at OpenDNS many years ago... we could have used some more people with more experience. Out of the first 10 employees ~8 of us were under 30.

    Pros

    - Compensation is pretty good.
    - I learned a lot just by having smart people around me.
    - Catering.
    - Work/life balance.

    Cons

    - HR solicited all these glowing employee reviews - so when something seems to good to be true, it usually is too good to be true.
    - Clique-ish culture - Lots of Ex-Sophos folks that keeps hiring their friends. Members of the clique include managers and protect each other. If you screw up and you're a part of the clique, don't worry, your manager will do his best to make sure that nobody else knows. If you screw up but you're not part of the clique, be ready for public shaming.
    - Quite a bit of technical debt.
    - Plenty of middle management that seem to collect a paycheck for not really producing much.

    Advice to Management

Some people do not deserve their title.
Do not let them impose their culture.
Do not let people who just read "scrum and kanban 101" lead teams.
Fear-based management simply does not work.
Focus on what made the company a great place at one point in time.

    Pros

Been here for a few years now and am extremely happy. The management team is rock solid and the technology being created is super interesting. The office (which recently doubled in size) is gorgeous and we have an awesome team that makes it a great place to be every day. The people hare are the best and the brightest and it truly shows through the product.

    Cons

Can't think of anything to complain about.

    Advice to Management
