    Pros

Bright folks before layoffs and mass exodus
    Friday lunch / office snacks

    Cons

    Bleak outlook for most verticals
No visibility into reviews, promotions, or bonus structure
Claims to be a products company when there is very little sw development expertise
Every year becomes the "worst year" for the firm
Change of direction every quarter is not yielding required results

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it's not a products company
Former CEO involvement may hinder progress

    It is a fine organisation

    I worked at Opera Solutions

    Pros

    - Good/smart people around
    - Nice/quality analytics work
    - quality junior staff
    - very good and transparent CEO

    Cons

    - Less focus on primary delivery
    - politicising any situation for own benefit
    - no personal support system

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - there is a difference of meaning in bonus as incentive and promotions as incentive. One should not swap for each other.
    - Early promotions of junior at batch level may end up creating issue to senior staff

I have been working at Opera Solutions

    Pros

Opera is very flexible. They have big dreams and investors with deep pockets. It has the feel of a start up but slightly more stability. They pay very competitively and the people I've worked with have been fantastic.

    Cons

Management is shifting, as of May 2014, they have a new CEO. He seems very capable and will hopefully turn around the chaos. Before the company seemed content to half-commit to too many different directions. Marching orders often changed and there was virtually no accountability. They're working really hard to clean this up now, and the future does have tons of potential

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There seems to be a greater need to accountability and a more formal channel for people to talk about their supervisors if they see mismanagement and waste.

Used to be a great, fantastic company but its best years are in the past

I have been working at Opera Solutions full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Opera was voted as one of the best company to work for in New Jersey. A great work environment.
This was driven mostly driven by a great corporate culture, fantastic people, and unique industry and functional know-how.
While many of the nice perks are gone (corporate box at the Madison Square Garden, Christmas parties and presents, etc.), the people are still fantastic. Friday lunches are something to look forward as they increase camaraderie and facilitate knowledge sharing.
Some of the best Senior Vice Presidents are still around and working with them is a true pleasure and great learning experience.
The new CEO is a great person and skilled leader; he is really doing his best to improve this situation. The recent town halls are finally providing some clarity on what' happening with the company.
The beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline from the Jersey City office is another nice element (and working from JC is not as bad as it sounds)

    Cons

The true cancer was the lack of steady long-term vision and industry focus.
The change of operating model (from a management consulting firm to a Big Data software company) brought some inevitable hurdles, but the absence of a coherent vision made things worse. The focus on dead-end products, the loss of historical clients, some bad corporate decisions, unexpected rounds of lay-offs, and a few broken promises drastically accelerated the existing attrition, and emptied the NY/JC offices.
Other issues to be addressed are:
Compensation (low salaries, no more bonuses, fuzzy sales commission plan, etc.)
    Communication/transparency
    Employee morale
Uncertainty and possibility of being acquired by a large system Integration services company. Maybe just a rumor, but it'd be nice to know more about the authenticity of this event and its implications

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep improving interactions with employees with honest messages about the company current situation and outlook. Provide early warning about future, potential risks, events (e.g., rounds of lay-offs, potential acquisitions)
    Maintain a coherent road-map

    Pros

Strong industry knowledge, especially in healthcare

    Cons

    Terrible senior management
Lack of transparency and broken promises
Lack of integrity in the sales process, eventually leading client to unrealistic expectations and working team to terrible hours
    Bad beneifts package

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow the new CEO to bring his own people and radically change the leadership group
Abandon bogus products and homegrown technologies (e.g. vektor) to refocus on ad-hoc solutions and consulting engagements, especially where they strategically lead to new client relationships and improved domain knowledge
Move to a smaller office space (this one looks very empty and kind of depressing now)
    Increase salary and reintroduce bonuses

    Pros

Intelligent workforce, competitive compensation, significant buzz in indistry

    Cons

political and toxic work environment, poor man management, lack of integrity in the sales process

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The high turnover and past shortcomings with major clients demonstrates that management needs to be more realistic and less desparate when selling new accounts and more importantly treat middle-management and other staff with more professionalism.

Former Employee - Staff Scientist in San Diego, CA (US)

I worked at Opera Solutions full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Was given the opportunity to work with some of the smartest, creative, and talented colleagues ever. Opera's diverse set of clients allows analysts and scientists to hone many skills. The previous out-of-control CEO was finally replaced by someone who seems very competent and understands how to think strategically. Opera's pay is above average, but you'll work for it.

    Cons

There are so many: the perpetually late (and highly opaque) review cycles whose results are often released when the next cycle is supposed to begin; the lack of strategic development of products that led to massive waste in capital and human potential; promised incentives that were never delivered; a sales staff that doesn't understand what is being promised or delivered; a 24/7 expected work environment that burns out employees; most of the best people have already left the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't make promises to clients or employees that cannot be kept. Need more transparency in performance review and incentive pay.

    Pros

Working with smart and talented people with constant flow of ideas. Company was started with passion and willingness to take risks. Combined leadership will provide significant strength.

    Cons

There will always be cons even with the most successful companies, the most successful failed before succeeding. Some of the people have a sense of entitlement due to their unrealistic expectations that causes a negative working environment. They are quick to point fingers when times are tough, but would never be able to start a business of their own.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continue to move forward.

    Pros

Just like Gene Haas is doing by getting the U.S. into F1 from NASCAR....Bernhard, and team, will be leading us through the transition from a very successful consulting organization...to a successful analytics software company.

We have been racing F1 with a NASCAR team and that doesn't work....and there are some that will prefer to stay with the oval track....nothing wrong with that....but there are many of us that like the roar of a nicely tuned F1 engine....so we are very encouraged !

Communication is improving and things are changing....and we still have and attract the best talent....

    Cons

This transition isn't easy or quick....the corporate culture , processes etc need to change....but we have the right team in place to make this happen. ....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the lines of communication alive....

I have been working at Opera Solutions

    Pros

Although most of them already gone or on their way out, there are some real talents in science and R&D. The company survives on hard work from folks in Shanghai and Dehli. Great people on the business side as well, but mostly at below manager level.

    Cons

Though packaged as a technology/solution company, Opera is still mostly run as an old school consulting firm, i.e. sales eat what they kill, fight for resources, and lots of internal politics. The incentive and organizational structure aren't set up for focused execution.

Former CEO never showed a clear conviction to build a great long-term company. Always shooting for a good next few quarters, and we are all gonna be rich! With this kind of mentality, things like developing your people and building a company culture naturally take a back seat to making a quick buck. Real successful companies rarely talk about IPO before actual IPO!

There is a clear disconnection and distrust between analytics and business. With most of the good EMs and above already gone, those that are left are mostly overpaid talking heads who have zero understanding of analytics or technology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Stop employee exodus in China and India.
    2) Between your people and investors, need to have the guts to pick your people.
    3) Clean up the mid-level management. Hire business people who understand technology.
    4) Clarify focus and stay with it.
