Contract Software Developer

Senior Software Developer (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor for more than a year

ProsGood mix of experience levels. Senior level staff very willing to work to help new staff learn.
Project lead managed work level and schedule very well.

ConsAs a contractor, my interaction with business leaders was limited. I felt that I could have contributed more, but since I was not a company employee, my range of work was too focused.

Advice to Senior ManagementTeam management changed during the time I worked there. Not communicated well to contract staff members.

Excellent place to work.

Gas Control Tech (Former Employee)
Stockton, CA (US)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat pay, and benefits.Lots of opportunity.

ConsSome people working there make a sport of causing others trouble, these people are usually well connected, and for some reason tend to get away with it.Some people are treated better then others because of this.People who just want to do their job, without the drama, fall victim to these groups of people. I guess this occurs everywhere, but it shouldn't.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't make decisions based on rumors. Some people show up to work, and others to play games, with others careers.Find out what is really going, on without bias, from the rumor mill, before taking a persons career from them.

Great People, Great Company, Great Benefits, sometimes boring job.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor

ProsWorking for PG&E has been a great exp for me! I've learned a lot of new skills in Distribution Operations that I never had before. Management has always been great with me. I can't speak for other departments, but the people I've worked with in Distribution Ops are great people and very helpful!

-Great Co-workers and Management
-Great Pay
-Great Benefits

ConsI could only think of two cons to be honest:

- The job can become very stressful and repetitive while working long hours and sometimes on-call.

- Although the company is very large, the locations you are able to work in Ops is very limited and not in the most desirable locations.

That being said, you able to move from department to department in PG&E to keep your work life interesting and find better locations to work. This does however require you to have some seniority in the union, which may take some time.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you are doing. Great Job!

A fulfilling and challenging experience for a Recruiter

IT Recruiter, Expert (Former Employee)
Concord, CA (US)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat client support, great team support, great tools and a great company

ConsThe challenges of the business put an increased requisition load on all recruiters that the company finds it hard to plan for.

Advice to Senior ManagementHang in there, the tide will turn for the better.

It wasn't for me.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for less than a year

ProsLots of room to advance, and move around the company.

ConsHowever, years of internal promotion has lead to under qualified people being promoted into positions they aren't qualified for.

The overall talk I got from multiple directions was "Fix it and make it better, but don't change anything. People here are slow to accept change." I'm sorry, but if something is broken and you need to fix it, then you also need change something.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize when you don't have internal talent to perform at industry standard levels, and hire from the outside. You have the right roles identified, but you have the wrong people filing them.

I hope you can find a way to retain 'new blood' when you get them on board.

IT Project Manager (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

Challenging but also financially rewarding

Customer Relationship Manager (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe pay and benefits are great.

ConsA very political company. Promotions and opportunities seem to be based on who you know, not what you know or your experience and expertise.

Exciting work if you can stomach continual reorganizations

Customer Relationship Manager (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor for more than a year

ProsExcellent work/life balance (literally 9 to 5) for good pay
It's a great career-builder to work here if you're interested in energy / cleantech / climate
Everyone is super, super nice and acts like family
Lots of opportunity to learn, move around, and advance your career
PG&E is one of the most progressive IOUs with lots of really exciting projects in renewables, storage, demand response, EVs, etc. etc.

ConsFrequent reorganizations. I found the constant anxiety that you could be laid off / lose your job to be very wearing. It's hard to get your job done if you're constantly trying to prove your worth to upper management. It also felt like there were a lot of disconnects between upper management and folks in the field.
I struggled a lot to find a different position within the company. My perception (which may or may not be reality) is that jobs are often opened with a specific candidate already in mind. It's more like working for a government agency than not.
I also didn't love the culture (it felt very fear-based to me) but have friends who really thrive in it. It probably just wasn't a good fit for me.
On a different note, PG&E is not terribly beloved in the Bay Area. I found it tricky to read negative articles about my company every week in the Chronicle.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
