Good start for a consulting career

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL (US)

I have been working at PwC full-time

ProsBig company, worldwide presence, highly valued consulting experience, Above 95% retention rate. Rich knowledge pool with more than 100,000 people worldwide.

ConsLook for people who closely fit company culture, prior work experience in consulting is important, if you do not have it then you are at a disadvantage. Long working hours of consulting industry. Lastly lots and lots of traveling

Advice to Senior ManagementWhile recruiting, focus more on the candidates knowledge rather than just the prior work experience

Outstanding; Great exposure to various industries early on

Senior Associate - Advisory (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL (US)

I have been working at PwC full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat office; generous benefits; international mobility

ConsImprovement needs to be made in assigning mentors and ensuring that the coach has the bandwidth to support the mentoring relationship. The coach - protege ratio for each coach was too high for my liking.

A good place to start your career

Advisory Manager (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL (US)

I worked at PwC full-time for more than 8 years

ProsManagers and above are enrolled in Pension Plan.
Nice benefits which includes compelling vacation time
Work culture is different and better than at BearingPoint
Practice takes your career aspirations or areas of focus into consideration before staffing you on a project. This is quite the opposite at BearingPoint.

ConsNo defined bonus at Manager level.
Firm practices are still old school
Technology practice is not as strong as BearingPoint
Not strong in project delivery
The leaders who came from BearingPoint and joined PwC still operate in a staff augmentation mode.

Looking for Lip Service and Back Biters? Work at PWC!

Tax Staff (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL (US)

I have been working at PwC full-time for more than 5 years

ProsAll of the negative comments that one hears about the big four are epitomized by the PWC Financial Services group. If you are looking for a cut throat work environment that works to provide a facade of progress and decency, then the FS department is perfect for you.

PWC promises job security, its need for staff, balancing the enormous work load (that at least they recognize) with an amazing work/life balance, and great company culture. Well, it is certainly true that nothing is what it seems.

Okay, there is one great thing about PWC and that is their dedication to providing employees with remote access. But don't try to use it, or you'll be deemed inefficient, although you crank out more quality work than the useless intern sitting in the dank conference room, staring emptily into his screen for twenty hours at a time.

ConsFor the past three years, job security for staff had been promised, those who received outstanding personal reviews were praised, and the firm constantly preached its need for associates. How, then, is it possible for this company to decide to cut jobs for those employees in an area of tax that is almost always understaffed? Or, rather than transfer experienced staff into other departments, will cut their tenure short just to "send a message" - and yes, that is a direct quote.

Well, maybe it is because the staff had the gall to cash in on work life balance, since, you know, it is somewhat necessary to have a personal life when you have a family to tend to. Or apparently it is even worse to attempt to work outside of the department, since, you know, professional development can only exist in the vacuum of a single department. But maybe the biggest offender was not spending time in the mind numbing company culture of "busy season fun" because, well, you know, having dinner at your desk rather than at home with your family comes before anything in your life.

If you think compensation makes up for any of this, think again. Zero raises were given to so much staff, zero bonuses given as a result of their overproduction.

Advice to Senior ManagementI can only say: Good riddance to PWC.

Luck of the draw...

Advisory Associate (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL (US)

I have been working at PwC full-time for more than a year

Pros- Lots of variety of projects.
- Opportunities for personal growth
- Better work/life balance than other consulting firms
- Base salary is decent

Cons- Huge company can prove to be a detriment
- Most of the projects are PMO/IT related
- A lot of managers/directors/partners care more about hitting their quota than employee development; as a result you can be stuck on a long term project that you have no interest in
- Bonus is a joke, and Performance reviews are all politics given the size of the firm

Advice to Senior ManagementUpward feedback is key. The range of skill-set when it come sot managing people their career development at the Manager level and above is drastic. Some are very active and accommodating, and try to help make every project a good learning experiences; others don't care at all about associate experience and work them to the ground doing invaluable work. Hold managers above accountable for the turnover and satisfaction of the associate experience.

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
