    Current Employee - Store Manager
    Current Employee - Store Manager

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

This job will definitely keep you on your toes. Constant changing demands of consumers and thin profit margins require one to be innovative and think out of the box to develop lasting solutions. Never stuck behind a desk and personal interaction with customers everyday kept me coming back to work each dog.

    Cons

Senior Management is completely disconnected from what is happening on the front lines of retail. These VP's and SVP's have unrealistic performance expectations and believe that stores should still be able to operate as they did 20 years ago when Buy were Store Managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get into the stores more often and put the hours back into the stores to take care of the customers.

    I worked at Safeway part-time

    Pros

Stable paycheck every week. Management is very flexible with scheduling. Pay is decent for a college student, but don't expect much potential for a raise.

    Cons

Poor work life balance. No room for growth. No potential for a pay raise. Upper management is not very organized.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Historically, Safeway has had a stable environment in which one can work for a long time in the private label group as a brand manager (unlike in a CPG firm where you either are promoted or worked out over time). It also is an environment in which you can see a lot, as there is not the same scrutiny from many layers of management as at a CPG firm. Also, while Safeway is conservative, you can be sure it is not going to do anything unsavory. That I did appreciate.

    Cons

It is a pretty conservative environment and not the most exciting. Many people in the grocery industry stay in it for their entire careers, so the setting is not always that dynamic or forward thinking.

Note that at the time of this writing Safeway has been slated to be acquired by the same company that owns Albertsons. This will be finalized at the beginning of the year 1/1/15. Time will tell if this is good or bad, but in the short run it is probably not good, as much will be in a state of chaos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow employees to be more flexible and innovative. The grocery industry is under extreme pressure and needs to innovate or it will die.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Talented hardworking people. Good benefits. Recently (this year) men no longer are required to wear ties and employees are now allowed to wear jeans on Friday. This is something the former CEO would never have allowed. Awesome company fitness center.

    Cons

Very long hours. Constant threat of being laid off if you cannot perform is exremely stressful. Very talented people are choosing to leave in light of the pending merger. Future employment status very fragile and uncertain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management out of touch with reality of what employeess are dealing with.

    Pros

This position has its freedom to decide where to go each day, allowing independent input into work for the day.

    Cons

No room for growth in Denver, advancement opportunity is reserved for the Phoenix and Pleasanton areas
