I worked at Safeway part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It was close to my house, and my dad works for the company's warehouse so I already knew what the ins and outs of the company were.

    Cons

The hours were sometimes difficult to pick from because I'm still in school so they didn't accommodate that well.

I have been working at Safeway part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The top pay for journeyman can range from $14-19 an hour, depending the the department, and the benefit package is second to none for medical. Friendly work environment, managers are easy to get along with, and has a wide variety of customer interactions.

    Cons

There is little to no opportunity for advancement, prior to making journeyman (which frequently takes 5+ years) wages are close to minimum, the company is generally "penny wise and pound foolish" when it comes the tools employees have to work with, schedules have little stability for most positions (times of day work and number of hours worked in a week vary widely). They nearly always under schedule most departments, which causes stress for both employees and customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your people skills are good, but better training and investment in the small things would make a big difference.

I have been working at Safeway part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Good cooperative environment, flexible hours, weekly paychecks.

    Cons

Not enough pay for the amount of work produced. If work is noticed, the raise isn't much better than just starting employment. Understaffed on the busiest days. If you're a part-time worker, the union sucks a big chunk of your paycheck although you have no need for it unless you're full time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better rewards and compensation for the effort put into the work.

I have been working at Safeway part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The management at Safeway are wonderful, and will work around school schedules. You are not an at-will employee, as you are protected by the UFCW union. You get holiday pay, and after your first year, a week of paid vacation. Working at Safeway is really great in college for those reasons. The health insurance you can receive is fantastic.

    Cons

The pay is ten cents above minimum wage until you have been working for Safeway for five years. The union requires you to pay an initiation fee of around $150. Then after that, you have to pay $50 a month to the union. This can be quite a hardship when you're living on barely more than minimum wage. The work is also very hard on your body.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Double check your checker alerts and other paperwork that gets passed down to lower level retail employees. The lack of proofreading is apparent in the misspellings, typos, and horrible misuse of ellipsis. This makes me wonder whether management just doesn't care, or is terribly incompetent.

    Pros

Working at Safeway is a very easy job, nothing particularly stressful or difficult and they will hire young people.

    Cons

Boring work environment, management, lots of politics, lots of people who have been there for 20 years, not the brightest bulbs on the tree working there.

I worked at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

If your looking for a job with good pay then this is it. But the pay is only good a the Store Manager level.

    Cons

This company offers no work life balance. In addition they use reverse discrimination when promoting. they tell their managers to focus on people of color and women. If your a white male this is not where you want to be. They don't want you.

    Cons

You're treated like crap, not only by customers but my management (if they don't like you which is bias)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
