Former Employee - Process Engineer in Milton Keynes, England

    I worked at Shaw Group

    Pros

Large company with lots of opportunity to travel. Good graduate teaching. High level of knowledge in experienced personnel to learn from.

    Cons

Promotions given on length of service rather than ability. Favourites are given opportunities to develop and the choice of projects. If experience isn't gained in an area within the first year it is difficult to gain experience as you are not put on projects you can't contribute to immediately. Annual reviews are a paper exercise with little or no effect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the long term prospects and careers of the employees rather than the singular project targets. Procedural requirements are overkill and hinder performance.

I worked at Shaw Group full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

One of the best company's to work for, no matter what your title was you felt like what you did made a difference. Everyone worked really well together.

    Cons

Very high stress and fast paced work environment, a lot of times OT was mandatory. Unfortunately this company was bought out and the new CEO/VP's did not encompass that safe work environment

    Current Employee - Mechanical Supervisor

I have been working at Shaw Group as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

All work was being done per work packages and drawings done by the companies own planners and design engineers.

    Cons

Other supervisors were getting involvrd in other supvisors work and not paying attension to thier own. There was an other first line supervisor that was very unprofeessional to the craft and other supervisors, the same person would not reconize the safety barriers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to train supervisors on more on the safety of all work enviroments

Former Employee - Electrical Engineer II in Stoughton, MA (US)

I worked at Shaw Group full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Large company with lots of opportunity for those who like to travel. The exposure to subject matter experts is incredible so there will never be a technical question left open. I worked for Shaw for 6+ years and really enjoyed my co-workers and the overall experience.

    Cons

The company is made up of multiple satellite engineering offices and the distribution of projects and, by default, exposure to new engineering opportunity became less and less evenly distributed across those offices despite relevant experience and competencies. The down side to not being willing to travel and not being located at engineering headquarters.
