    Pros

Lots of responsibilities early on in my career

    Cons

Cronyism and nepotism is an endemic that should be eradicated!

    Pros

Large company with lots of opportunity to travel. Good graduate teaching. High level of knowledge in experienced personnel to learn from.

    Cons

Promotions given on length of service rather than ability. Favourites are given opportunities to develop and the choice of projects. If experience isn't gained in an area within the first year it is difficult to gain experience as you are not put on projects you can't contribute to immediately. Annual reviews are a paper exercise with little or no effect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the long term prospects and careers of the employees rather than the singular project targets. Procedural requirements are overkill and hinder performance.

    Pros

It was a great place to work. I worked with them for over 8 years. The Project teams were professional, Good salaries, Good opportunities

    Cons

Upper Management / Corporate was short sighted and did not reacts soon enough to keep the Denver office occupied with contract work. Another Denver Engineering Office (Fluor, Bechtel, now Shaw) lost to management inability to actual do what their title say.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is sad to realize that a company with such a legacy (Stone & Webster) could be managed as just a playing piece of The board game "Monopoly"

    I worked at Shaw Group

    Pros

The co-workers were very friendly towards me and would either answer my questions or refer me to someone that could. I was paid overtime in the field either at time and half or straight-time overtime.

    Cons

Upper Management likes to overhelm the staff. You work many of days late into the evening. There is also a lot of favoritism between senior management and subordinates. Thus, it's good to be on the good side of the person doing your yearly review.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should better understand the workload of it's staff.

I worked at Shaw Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to chase profitable prospects, thinking outside the box, lively environment. This company is focused on "the next big thing" which is nice for an often stagnant industry.

    Cons

This is not the place for those who are dogmatic about processes and procedures are the traditional corporate environment. Remember it is an amalgamation of parts and understanding the history of the individuals is important to get along.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Now that it is sold to CB&I, it is going to be an interesting integration exercise. CB&I should not take this lightly.

I have been working at Shaw Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Christmas party x2 (kids party + adult party) are fantastic if you go. Social events if you're interested. Work more or less as much as you want, higher pay rate

    Cons

Difficult to manage rotating schedule and weekends as single father, all other aspects of the company that are cutting corners or not doing their jobs correctly "snowball" onto installers shoulders during time of install to be dealt with all at once. Higher pay rate only truly worth it if you work excessively as expenses don't increase much when you work more but are the same if you work less. Company currently changing customer experience focus but without changing unit based pay structure to account for change in expectation.
