Great culture and co-workers but growing bureaucracy and politics

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsNice, smart co-workers. Great classes, benefits, and activities for employees. Decent work-life balance for the most part.

ConsA few in-ept leaders promoted because they play politics well. Too many people involved in sign-offs.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere needs to be 360 feedback so that managers get feedback from their team. A few in-ept managers promoted because they manage up well but manage down horribly.

Shutterfly is a good company that treats employees well.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGood perks, free products, more than you can use. There are a lot of good people that want to build and do the right thing. Generally speaking most people have good attitudes.

ConsI don't think the company is focused enough on building a great product to reach more customers rather than trying to nickle and dime current customers for a bit more revenue.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on a great customer experience.

    Great people, great environment

Production Artist (Former Employee) Fort Mill, SC (US)

ProsI was only there for 8 weeks during the holiday season, but there was a constant emphasis on people, and there was always some one accessible if you needed guidance.

ConsI didn't see anything that could be considered a con

I will have to say awesome.

Customer Management Team (Current Employee) Fort Mill, SC (US)

ProsThe company family picnics and the openness of everything that is going on with in the company. This company is pretty transparent with the changing being made. We all know the strategic plans and it feel great to know the company's growth or where they want the company to go.

ConsThe constant changes daily. All about numbers and not employees thoughts.

The momentum ended just as quickly as it began.

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee) Fort Mill, SC (US)

ProsOpportunity for overtime great during the holidays.

ConsSupervisors stressed utilizing leadership especially during high call volume, only there was hardly anyone available or not willing to help.

Major favoritism, talked a good game but the supervisors were very cliquey.

Professional from the outside, unprofessional once you get the feel of the environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementFollow the rules you set for your team!

Stop treating those not in the "crew" like crap, then calling later for them to come back and break their backs for SHUTTERFLY!

    Shutterfly: A House of Cards

Manager (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA (US)

ProsFor the most part, Shutterfly delivers on its promise on print quality and speed. Employees like the access to free product and perks.

ConsCEO portrays the company to the public and shareholders as a successful "family" of brands who is smarter and better than the competition. In reality, Shutterfly is a dysfunctional family, a "Mr. Potato Head" of mis-fit entities who have no real connection other than their target customer. The industry is ripe for a competitor to blow Shutterfly away. The elephant in the room is Costco, who ceased its partnership with Shutterfly and is quickly grabbing market share at half the price and equal (or better quality). Poor strategic purchasing decisions like MyPublisher and Borrowlenses improve revenue slightly but take time and resources to run. Lack of female executives is appalling and almost sickening for a company that has a customer base of OVER 90% women. CEO constantly talks about core customer being a mom and references his wife's purchasing habits qualify him to be the voice of the customer(?!) ALL Shutterfly executives VP and above leadership are white men. Turnover at all levels in the organization is increasing and many top managers are looking elsewhere for jobs.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire women. Hire diverse points of view. Approach the market with creativity and innovation. Quit buying crappy companies. Stop quoting your wife's opinion and start talking to real customers through research. Stop believing you are the best of the best and challenge yourself a little.
