Pros – There are a lot of benefits at being at a larger company like Skanska, and for this industry, it's a great organization to have on the resume. They excel at their core competencies: building projects really well, in a safe manner, with sustainability in mind. I'm also really impressed by all the initiatives they implement, from they promote innovative tools and processes to green. They also really care about the people and do a great job with internal and external training -- not as many employers do this as you'd think. You have to stay proactive in your career development but with probing good things can happen.
Cons – The downside to a larger organization of this kind is a mess of politics the higher you go. It's not immune to leadership issues, so it's best to learn quickly who the people are that make the decisions that will impact you in your day-to-day. Also, a fair amount internal communications issues, although they are working on it, and the red tape they experience with their European counterpart Skanska AB is very intense sometimes.
Advice to Senior Management – Time to find a better way to recognize your people, it's the little things that matter, and I think more people would like to feel like leadership is more accessible.

Current Employee – been working at Skanska USA Building full-time for more than a year
Pros – Good job security. A chance to work on some of the most challenging and unique projects in the country and in the world. Opportunity to work abroad.
Cons – Advancement can be difficult since it is such a large company. Pay increases for merit are very seldom. They do not reward great personal performance. It seems that everyone from the lowest to the top performers receive the same "cost of living" pay increases each year. The only way to make more money is to get promoted.

Pros – Skanska has evolved from national acquisition of large construction management companies. Within the last 10 years, Skanska developed a system to streamline, standardize, and advance technologically to keep the company ahead of the competition. That's the overall picture. For people looking to work for Skanska, especially new graduates or semi-experienced technical candidates, each project and location dictates the potential experience that one can have. I was fortunate to be placed, not randomly but with careful consideration from HR and the big guns from Operations, in a location where I learned a lot, and learned a lot fast. This is opposite where many Project Engineers are stuck doing one simple task, repetitively, for months. It really depends on the project that requires help. Some people love repetition, while others do not. Nonetheless, out of the construction management market, this is the best company to work for (based on experienced workers with history with other large construction management companies). Civil engineers will do great here because their knowledge makes a Project Engineer very effective and a strong asset to the company.
Cons – Not for technically poised electrical or mechanical engineers. This job is strictly Project Management. In a way there's nothing wrong with that since Project Management is something one can master so that he or she can focus on the complexities of construction. What I don't understand is that Skanska requires candidates with electrical or mechanical engineering backgrounds for Project Engineer positions while a person with Business Management background will do just as good, or better, than a technical candidate.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep up the good work, remain transparent as best as possible, and try to build more OneSkanska culture as much as possible.
