    I worked at SunGard

    Pros

Good salary, flexible hours and work from home opportunities (for some), good work-life balance, some very talented, driven and friendly people, a drive to move to lean and agile project management and engineering practices, nice bright and modern offices (before move out of Midtown).

    Cons

Benefits squeezed down year after year, little to no bonus payments, flat structure leading to limited career growth opportunities, some staff were not up to par but somehow managed to avoid staff cuts while talented people were lost, questionable standard of work from offshore office, little real synergy between product groups or business units.

SunGard is not as well known in the industry as it should be, and where it is known it is because of one specific product and not for the company as a whole. Working for SunGard doesn't come with as high a reputation that it deserves.

SunGard is a sales focused company. If you are not working directly in sales you will be second-class in the company.

This is a very large company and senior management can appear to be out of touch with individual contributors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do more to promote the SunGard brand as a whole. Keep a high bar when hiring and don't be afraid to get rid of dead wood (but make sure it is the right people). Think long term when moving work offshore; is it really the right thing to move work offshore when it takes two to do the job of one onshore person and quality is compromised? Don't scrimp on benefits and bonuses; you will lose talent to competitors. Have a consistent and fair work from home policy. Don't focus so much on sales as a primary goal; focus on quality first and sales will come.

I have been working at SunGard

    Pros

Flexibility, work-life balance, location, decent benefits

    Cons

The intensive efforts to reorganize and "get lean" resulting in high employee turnover and layoffs, led to lack of retention of skilled and loyal employees. Over a short period of time, several managers left positions for new roles internally or new opportunities outside of the organization. Serious lack of communication among the staff as the reorganization efforts ramped up. Often left to make sense of new role in a short amount of time with limited planning and understanding of certain department functions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve communication to the staff to the extent possible and perform better planning to manage department change.

    Pros

    Nice of local management team.
Many products of financial domain which can help technical engineer to learn financial business.

    Cons

It seems the cost control will be more and more important than ever.
Many product's technology are too old and company have no willing to improve it.

I worked at SunGard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

As an organization they appear to be switching from a strategy of growth through acquisition to one of integration and business development. This is encouraging to see. Now developing core technology strategy and communicating to staff more often. Proactive management development programs. Promoting environmental awareness.

    Cons

Need less of a focus on lean management principles. Pushing a lot of work offshore which will reduce their ability to support local clients.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leadership have a clear vision and are moving towards it. The strategy change may be a little jarring for staff but I think the company will become stronger for it.

Successful Business Unit Relies on Limited Resources and Underpaid Employees

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at SunGard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The people in my former business unit are talented, hardworking, and resourceful. They routinely faced and conquered a mountain of industry and client led deliveries with limited resources. Benefits were good. Vacation policy is outstanding - up to five weeks off depending on your tenure. Ability to telecommute once a week was also a plus. Depending on your position, a good work/life balance is possible.

    Cons

Compensation is below industry standards. Business unit leadership has a lack of appreciation for efforts required to successfully support certain products and clients. Office morale is dismal. Quality work is often not rewarded or even recognized in a significant way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The pool of raise/bonus money allocated yearly for business units to divide among the many deserving employees is insufficient. The yearly review process is terrible. Career opportunities are lacking.
