Advice to Senior Management – Recruit general managers with clinical experience. Coordinators in Asssited living and Rem have the toughest jobs. Remember them when you are introducing yet another report you desperately need. This takes them away from the core business activity of care. Celebrate and use staff skills.People lose heart when you bring outside experts into the community and overlook the qualified staff you have.
Encourage staff not to work excessive hours. This is demoralising, unsafe and affects health. You will lose good staff.
Deal with the daily corporate bullying that is endemic in the organisation led the example of the most Senior HR person. This is destroying your business and costing you money.
I wanted to use my skills in dementia to improve the lives of seniors. A promise wa given that I could share some of my research with the US. This never materialised and I never got to use my skills so I have left to go to an organisation that has embraced them, We have achieved in less than two months full NHS support to roll out the findings of this research. Sunrise you missed out.

Former Employee – worked at Sunrise Senior Living part-time for more than a year
Pros – The values and mission are first and foremost a commitment this company makes to its residents and their families; they generally mean it. Executive management has its heart in the right place, they just need to do a little more. They are approachable and team members, in most cases, are valued partners in the care of residents. The residents and their families are simply wonderful.
Cons – Staffing, although better than most residential living communities, needs to beefed up to more adequately care for residents. The pay is marginal and too many care managers must work two and three jobs just to make ends meet and this can negatively impact the level of care because they are TIRED. Coordinators (department managers) need more training and accountability in leadership and communication. Too many employees are hired on a part-time basis when some positions should clearly be full-time to better serve the residents and their families.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire better coordinators (department managers) who are superior and committed leaders (not bully managers) and hold them accountable for training and maintaining high quality care managers to provide the best care and most appropriate treatment of residents. A care manager who is coming off the night shift from their second or third job can't be the best they can be when they are already exhausted. And a coordinator who doesn't understand this and doesn't address it should find anouther place to work. The pay is poor. Pay a more adequate wage; hire more people for full-time positions that need to be full-time and only hire the very best of the best. Your turnover will improve, you'll have better committed employees and your residents and their families will benefit, not to mention the company. You're on your way; you just need to do a little more. I loved working at Sunrise and I miss it.

Current Employee – been working at Sunrise Senior Living part-time for more than a year
Pros – Wonderful residents and supporting families. The community is beautiful and is getting better. Many employees are great team members.
Cons – Management does not seem to know who is doing their job and who is not. They are easily fooled or don't care enough to do anything about it. They spend too much time on the PC utilizing outdated programs to try and track information rather than on the floor coaching employees. Too much documentation is done in writing and not electronically. Outdated technology.
Advice to Senior Management – Walk the floor throughout the day, pm and come unannounced at night. Know your employees and their true work ethic. Support those who are doing their jobs. Get rid of those who are not and hire team players who love working with senior citizens.

Former Employee – worked at Sunrise Senior Living full-time for less than a year
Pros – Working in a beautiful community and home for wonderful residents. Seeing them on a daily basis is a joy. Helping them and their families is very rewarding.
Cons – Poor management, lack of leadership and poor communication. A lack of integrity and honesty in the management team. Overpromising and underdelivering the families looking for quality care for their loved ones. Promising core values and principles of service that are not practiced. Putting on a show for upper managment when they visit, which does not depict a true picture of how things are on a day to day basis. Very poor morale and employees are afraid to speak up about their concerns out of fear of reprisal or retaliation from those in charge.
Advice to Senior Management – It's unfortunate that management is not opening their eyes to the real issues in this community. This location will not succeed until the leadership changes. With a lack of due diligence and the dishonesty that portraits a false display of leadership, things will not change. Based on my experience, I would not recommend anyone to work at that location, nor would I recommend someone to live there. In time, the truth will always prevail.
