I worked at Symantec full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great employee benefits. Amazing training and personal development opportunities (all on the company's time), including taking industry-recognised certification. Beautiful office campuses all over the world.

    Cons

Very short-sighted leadership decisions affecting technical support's ability to resolve customer issues promptly. Salaries could be a lot higher. More attention could be paid to ensuring staff are happy. All staff. Not just Sales/Marketing/HR.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People should be promoted more rapidly and need to be rewarded if you want to keep them.

I worked at Symantec (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some excellent and talented people, a breadth of interesting products. A top market position providing access to enterprise organisations with high quality opportunities.

    Cons

They don't know what they have or is that had. That goes for both products and people. They give away the good stuff for 10% at the end of the quarter. Short term surrender monkeys.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find some passion, extend your thinking beyond the next quarter. Do you remember when you had a strategy?

I worked at Symantec full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Symantec are a well established leader in the security and information space. Good benefits and overall an enjoyable place to work

    Cons

As the market has evolved towards more advanced threat detection, Symantec product development needs to accelerate. Two changes of CEO in a very short period of time (the current CEO is interim) and other leadership changes have yet to yield results and have led to a great deal of uncertainty for customers and employees alike.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Identify and implement permanent CEO as quickly as possible. Set and communicate a clear and consistent strategy across all markets. Accelerate product development. Break down silos in the business.

    I worked at Symantec

    Pros

Good people at most levels, good product portfolio, desire to make it work at most levels

    Cons

SVP's at EMEA level have formed their own clique which is difficult to penetrate. They say all the right things but then do not follow though unless your face fits. It's a serious flaw which puts many good people off joining, and also precipitates attrition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove the clique - the company is capable of so much more

    Pros

Great atmosphere, great trainings, great support, great customer focus, great product, great reference, fantastic kick-offs in Las Vegas

    Cons

Lots of compliance trainings, very American culture, lack agility to develop products

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more agile and innovative especially for mobile security, and consumer data privacy....

I have been working at Symantec as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good compensation, good products, broad base of customers. Talented dedicated people to work with.

    Cons

Lacks direction for long term goals. Slow to market with new technology, lacks customer and business intelligence, driving growth is difficult. Customers are not clear on the Symantec offering. Very little room to grow professionally.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company invest a lot in training and learning, overall pretty good salary ( if you are in the right role) and work-life balance, possibility to buy discounted company shares, gym allowance, pension, health & dental insurance. There is a opportunity to work from home. Work colleagues are generally nice and helpful, good office atmosphere.

    Cons

A lot of business units work in silos. The company is very american-centric and a lot of important decisions are being done in US. Poor Senior Management planning, politics, favouritism - it is all about who you know and relationships you have at the senior management level. The Senior Management create unnecessary duplicated roles/teams and then let people go. Frequant layoffs. 2 reorganisations/layoffs in less than one year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You really need to sort your planning out. Reoganisations and layoffs every year will not do any good for the company!.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company still recognised as a global leader and still is a great job if you want to progress in your career. Also many employee rewards available including pension, den plan and gym membership.

    Cons

Company is still in transition and the morale has dropped through the roof especially with management lacking direction. Also Symantec think they are something like Microsoft and Apple when they are clearly not. Still a lot of work and progress to be made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work life balance is non existent and with this, many employees are leaving for competitors in droves. At this rate they will struggle to get talent.
