    Pros

Pay for performance, great amount of paid time off, company appears to value/reward hard work and solid performance. Talented work force.

    Cons

Overall culture has declined, much less work life balance then in the past, overtime being asked for each and every week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get on the same page. Slow down the amount of change made to processes. Do a better job in retaining good talent.

    Pros

Very ethical company, great people to work with, strong customer focus. Work from home option is a great benefit and helps with work/life balance. Advancement opportunities if you work hard. Competitive benefits package.

    Cons

Promotion opportunties for tenured employees or for those who work remotely. Although working remotely is great for many reasons, there aren't many remote jobs that you can advance into which makes advancement difficult if you don't wish to relocate.

    Pros

This is a great company. People are friendly and great to work with. Solid foundation with a lot less layoffs than other insurance companies in the area. Opportunities for career growth and continued education if you're so inclined to go after it.

    Cons

Very old school office culture. OK to work from home sometimes but otherwise they feel you must be in the office to be successful. They don't understand that with technology today employees can get as much done (and in a lot of cases be more productive) working in a flexible/virtual environment. Benefits were OK but be ready to pay a big share of the cost if you ever need to go to the doctor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more flexible with people's work life balance. Allow for telework.

    Pros

I like the opportunities to make an impact on the organization by fostering change and efficiency. I have a great work-life balance with amazing benefits of a company gym and other perks. The bonuses have been getting back to their high levels and the management it really working together for our long-term future success.

    Cons

There are still a few old school middle managers that are holding us back with their obsession on heirarchy and "years" spent at the company versus the value someone can add and what new opportunities can bring. The good news is management is aware and is working to weed out the change resistors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good look at your middle managers and the value they add. Are they stiffling their staff? Are they fostering growth and developing their teams? Are they overly focused on their silohs?

Too lean, metrics overly emphasized, culture declining over years

Current Employee - Full Time in Hartford, CT (US)

    Pros

Strong, talented peers and great learning environment. New leadership will hopefully improve organization.

    Cons

Company too lean. Metrics important but gets in the way of reality of situation or real thought process which does not produce the intended measurable positive result the company desired. Good employees have been professionally hung with poor metrics stacked against them and a lesser too unaware or weak to investigate, take action or correct. Work loads increase at every job level. Additional assignments added with no additional pay or hours in the day. Company achieves savings and worker squeezed. Some talented people leave because of this practice which weakens the company. Also, company making IT mistakes. Overly dependent on off shore partners to cut costs. Company is working on new computer platforms to replace outdated systems. Former leadership not strong. Former leaders got company looking better on paper but the cost to employee, frequent big mistakes and long term sustained results of company and reputation are unknown. Culture negatively impacted. New leadership has important decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep The Hartford name in mind when making decisions. If we want to be considered the best, we must perform, serve, be and pay the best. Do not cheapen over 200 years for small, short term gains. We can be wise and smart with shareholder investment while keeping the bar set high for service, claims, value and compensation for valued agency partners and employees.

Former Employee - Customer Service Representative in Santee, CA (US)

    Pros

Fellow employees, camaraderie, casual attire days.

    Cons

Meat-grinder, turn-over rate 75% first year, push for perfection, blatantly lying to customers, political correctness, nepotism, salary to start is low, advancement does not include higher pay only different title, every facet of one's job is scrutinized, when dealing with difficult customers don't expect management to have your back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share the wealth, reward employees who perform above expectations, stop using your employees ideas as your own, tell the truth to customers.
