I worked at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The DoD is a great organization to work for. Great stability, and comprehensive packages.

    Cons

There is a lot of organizations that are top heavy, and may be cumbersome to effect change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower the workforce, and let information be communicated through out the levels of the workforce. This will alleviate a majority of the bottlenecks in communication flow.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have worked as a civilian for the DOD for since 1983 (except for four years as a contractor). The work is exciting and the opportunities are plentiful if one applies them self.

    Cons

You can make more money in Industry, especially as a government contractor. changes in leadership often results in changes of direction; leadership changes often..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Certain services ( like information technology) could be run better if managed like a business rather than a military organization.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, smart people. Travel. Part of a great team. Great opportunities to advance. Good benefits for families and generally really good management.

    Cons

Crazy schedule. Travel is often to sub-optimal locations. Furloughs, fickle Congress, pay freezes. The job can get very political as you advance. A lot of people hat you because you are a federal employee.

    Pros

    -Comprehensive benefits for federal employees,
-Flex schedule offers one day off every other week,
    -Located between DC and Baltimore,
    -New building

Defense Media Activity is a media organization that produces audio, audiovisual, print, photography and graphics products for an internal DOD audience. DMA employs military personnel, federal employees and federal contractors.

    Cons

-Everything moves at a turtle's pace,
-Politics and territoriality thwart progress and innovation,
    -Shaky future with shrinking budget,
-Lack of cohesive vision and teamwork

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Enable, promote, sustain and reward innovation,
-Shake it up, things are clogged in the middle,
-Workforce is bored; create big projects,
-Turn off the lights! The whole building is lit 24/7

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to evaluate full up systems that very few people ever even get closed to. Service to country, efforts made ensuring systems are thoroughly tested before our troops have to use them in combat.

    Cons

Witness of governmental waste first hand. Frustration from watching people abuse the system and coast with minimal effort.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline processes, fire the dead weight, broaden the incentive flight programs, eliminate wasteful "required" trainings.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits and potential job security, depending on who you are.

    Cons

Hard work means nothing. People around you will hardly do anything and they will receive raises and be codled. Management can change fairly constantly since you will work with military. Can sometimes be good, but when you have issues, the management changes before anything is taken care of and the new boss may not care or agree with your issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat everyone fairly. Give those employees who do work harder more praise and opportunities and listen to their issues. Those that don't work or are lazy or abuse the system should not be granted continued employment.
