I have been working at USAA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Culture, the company has a great culture and the mission is admirable. They truly care for the military and want to do right for all members.

    Cons

It can be VERY difficult to promote. Sometimes you will have 50 people applying for one Director position. There are LOTS of managers and very few Director or above positions. Also, in Phoenix, there are even fewer spots available. It is obvious at times the company would rather hire someone who can be shaped rather than someone who can shape others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire the best person regardless of resume. A Masters Degree from University of Phoenix is no reason to hire someone who doesn't have a Masters Degree.

I have been working at USAA full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They always focus on Member service and value.

    Cons

It can be bureaucratic. Since it's a large company, it is hard to quickly change processes to meet market demands.

Current Employee - That's Not Important At USAA in San Antonio, TX (US)

I have been working at USAA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

USAA is more than just an insurance company. It is a culture that believes in service above self. Every day my coworkers and I work together towards our mission, which is to serve the military and their families. USAA has world class benefits and is a very generous employer, but it is this sense of a higher purpose that keeps me motivated more than anything else.

    Cons

There are occasional turf wars etc., but those can be overcome with humility and servitude and by keeping members first.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None. USAA has always had great leadership, Bob Davis sharpened the business focus, Joe Robles made us more member- and mission-centered, now Stuart Parker will take USAA to the next level for our members.

I have been working at USAA

    Pros

USAA takes good care of its employees

    Cons

Before you try to get the job you should know, USAA only accepts so many resumes then stops, without telling you that you will not even be considered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask employees about each other to see who is and is not really a hard worker or team player.

I have been working at USAA

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn new things and work in different areas. Could easily spend an entire career in IT at USAA but move into new IT areas every couple of years.

    Cons

Office dynamics can be stressful, especially if you're trying to further your career. Very high expectations and low likelihood of getting the recognition you deserve due to the size and caliber of the workforce in IT.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your leaders the managers. Don't make the politicians the managers because then you still need to find leaders.

I worked at USAA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Outstanding benefits! I retired with a nice pension and my dollar to dollar matched 401k. The best part of the pension package is the supplemental medical coverage which takes care of what Medicare doesn't. And the cost subtracted from my pension (optional) is less than the supplemental policies on the market. And mine includes dental and optical for pennies! My retired friends are envious!

    Cons

None! I truly can not think of any, unless it would be rush hour traffic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice. They know what they're doing.

Former Employee - Information Security Analyst in San Antonio, TX (US)

I worked at USAA full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I would of never been where I am in my career if it was not for starting out at USAA in Information Security after college. Everything I learned has helped immensely, and I had some of the best team members, mentors, and managers that I could of ever asked for.

    Cons

Only downside is the fact that it is in San Antonio, if you are wanting a family then that is great, but for young professionals, it is not that great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to care about your employee's personal and career development.
