I have been working at University of Ottawa full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Flexible hours and working from home possible. Working under a very good supervisor who is very open to ideas and enthusiastic about outcomes. I'm being paid to further my education and work on topics that I'm very interested in, I am definitely lucky. The entire mechanical engineering department is very helpful and open, if I have questions the faculty is always helpful and willing to share their knowledge.

    Cons

Shared basement office, outdated lab equipment, limited summer TA opportunities.

I have been working at University of Ottawa as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Worked on a term contract with the University Library. There is a strong body of leadership, an openess to trying new things, and a desire for even their short-term employees to grow on the job.

    Cons

Cultural interta. There is some difficulty to having the org adapt to new technology. Still uses Libguides, for example. This is the only example I can thing of, and in no way should be a make-or-break thing. I had a fantastic time working for them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay the course, but beware the looming fiscal crisis.

I worked at University of Ottawa as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Nice place to work - supervisors are easy to get along with and provide helpful insight regarding all job related questions. I considered myself a strong writer before I obtained this position but learned a lot on the job. Great way to interact with and assist other students.

    Cons

Not allowed to be on a laptop while on duty - even if there are no students in the center. Makes it difficult to make the time go by as shifts are usually 3 times a week for 3 hours.

The nature of these positions is what it is, but the development of better SOPs and operating manuals would make consistency easier to maintain from year to year.

I have been working at University of Ottawa full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There are some really great people in the department and top-notch research is conducted. Great work environment.

    Cons

HR and university administration is a complete mess. Issues include paperwork that goes missing or is not processed on time, people not getting paid on time due to admin errors. Also, 0 benefits for post-docs. You get your salary through your prof, and that's it - the university doesn't give you anything. You won't be in either the staff or student's union, so you better have private coverage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the administration at the faculty and higher level.
